new 2 series coupé retains current model’s magic

“If you’re not a fan of the large grille on the 4 Series, there’s good news: the 2 Series won’t feature it” BMW’S small-car line-up has moved almost exclusively to front-wheel drive in recent years, but fans of the brand can’t deny the successful results. Compact SUVs such as the X1 and X2 are sure-footed and economical, while the latest 1 Series offers more space and is still great to drive. However, there has always been one key outlier: the 2 Series Coupé. This small, rear-driven sports car with its six-cylinder engine options and raucous M2 edition has become a bit of a darling of the range, so purists should be thrilled to hear that BMW hasn’t gone cold on the idea of a less profitable, back-to-basics small sports car. Instead, it’s…

volkswagen arteon ehybrid

sean_carson@autovia.co.uk VOLKSWAGEN’S Arteon Fastback is a more emotional alternative to the practical Passat saloon. But adding the firm’s eHybrid plug-in powertrain means it can now appeal to the head as well as the heart, and this petrol-electric set-up is well suited to the swoopy Arteon. The car is a premium product that focuses on refinement, and the 1.4 TSI eHybrid delivers plenty of this, thanks to its electrical assistance. The electric motor makes 113bhp on its own, taking the total output to 215bhp and 400Nm of torque. It’s this that helps whisk the Arteon along in relative refinement. VW claims a total of 39 miles of electric running, but in our experience this was closer to 30 miles. Still, in EV mode performance is adequate and the Arteon will easily be able to…

young drivers at risk on rural roads

YOUNG drivers are at a disproportionate risk of dying in a collision on a country road, according to an analysis of fatality data. Some 71 per cent of all road fatalities among those aged 17 to 24 occur on rural roads, against a national average of 57 per cent. Drivers aged 17 are at greatest risk. The research comes from the AA Charitable Trust, which found the A229 in Kent has the highest collision density among young drivers, while the A6076 in County Durham carries the greatest risk overall. Researchers from Agilysis and the Road Safety Foundation ran the analysis for the Trust, studying 74,919 crashes involving young drivers between 2013 and 2018. AA president Edmund King said: “Our data clearly shows that the rural road risk is highest for the youngest drivers, and…

Got a query? products@autoexpress.co.uk Q Best way to fix wheel chip? COULD you suggest the best product to repair my wheel, a standard 20-inch alloy fitted to a Mercedes S 500 L. The black gloss has a tiny stone chip and from experience, if untreated, moisture and corrosion will eventually take hold. Paul Gonzalez, E-mail A A PROFESSIONAL refurb will guarantee a good colour match and the repair should be invisible, but it’s unlikely to be cheap. You could do a DIY job, preparing the surface then using a touch-up brush and lacquer, but a match may be tricky. A wheel-paint specialist should offer a suitable kit. Q Where can I find lost code? WHEN I bought my car new I upgraded the head unit. I’ve now sold the car and want to sell the original head…

Ferrari Formula 1: Every Race Car Since 1950 Stuart Codling (Motorbooks, www.quartoknows.com) Price: £40 Rating: THIS book is a thorough guide to all of Ferrari’s F1 cars. The period photography is beautifully chosen and presented, and high print values show it off to its best. Really good for any Ferrari or F1 fan, and not too pricey, given its quality. Off-Road with Clarkson, Hammond & May Phillipa Sage (Ad Lib, www.adlibpublishers.com) Price: £8.99 Rating: A REALLY interesting look behind the scenes with probably the motoring world’s best-known presenters. Coming from the trio’s long-suffering PA means candid stories that you won’t have heard before, focusing on the touring and live shows rather than the TV side. Great if you’ve read everything TG-related and want a new viewpoint. Desert Rider Available for: iOS, Android Price: Free Rating: SHORT levels, swift running and a surprising amount of…
