editor’s letter

Within 24 hours of being presented at the World Superyacht Awards in May, the Neptune for Sailing Yacht of the Year was occupying pride of place on board 106.7-metre Black Pearl . I’m always very happy to see a Neptune sitting on a desk or behind some glass on the yachts I visit. No other award in yachting is coveted quite like this one, because no other award in yachting is judged by an independent panel of superyacht owners – and they take their jobs extremely seriously. The 22 judges made more than 250 individual inspections of the nominated yachts this year, and spent weeks poring over GAs, specs, photos and videos before choosing the winners. Despite organising the event, BOAT International has no say in the outcome of the…

Graham Walser Graham has been a photographer for more than 30 years. He has shot for Vogue , Tatler and Harper’s Bazaar , as well as yacht designers Jon Bannenberg and Evan K Marshall. For this month’s issue he shot the beautiful Neptune earrings on page 81. What’s the oddest thing you have been asked to shoot? I’ve taken pictures of everything from a tube of toothpaste to Picasso paintings. Once I was shooting a new chocolate biscuit, and a gallery owner visiting at the time [mistook it for an artwork] and asked if the biscuit was going for auction after I had shot it What’s the most stressful thing to have happened on a shoot? Once in an art gallery a second-century piece of Asian art fell off the stand on to the floor…

najiba’s noble lines

The 58m Feadship Najiba has been captured enjoying the splendid isolation of the Norwegian fjords following her spring delivery. The all-aluminium Vitruviusdesigned superyacht was spotted on her maiden voyage and will soon head south to spend the summer cruising the Mediterranean. Najiba , meaning “noble” in Arabic, features naval architecture by Philippe Briand and De Voogt. The design was the result of three years of collaboration between the designers and the highly experienced owners. The interior is by Studio Liaigre. feadship.nl…

innovation meets conservation

The new-build sailing superyacht market is progressing with a largely flat performance in 2019, according to Global Order Book figures (which are measured September to September). A total of 61 projects were reported sold or under construction by the end of April this year. The market still has until September to outstrip the 70 sailing projects sold or under construction in last year’s GOB, although the figure to April falls slightly short of the 67 projects recorded in that period last year. Despite this, brokers and shipyards are staying positive, and report an influx of eco-conscious clients making new-build and brokerage enquiries. Northrop & Johnson sales broker Joost Goverts said the company is experiencing “well over the average orders recorded for the last eight years”, and points to bustling activity across…

eye opener

“I have concentrated on photographing attractive people who were doing attractive things in attractive places,” said Slim Aarons of a career spent in the company of the world’s elite. His speciality could have been a reaction against his formative years, capturing the ugly realities of the battlefield as a military photographer during the Second World War. After the conflict, Aarons was hired by Life magazine and went on to take some of the 20th century’s most glamorous and intimate portraits of the rich and famous, often pictured against the honeyed backdrop of the French Riviera or the brightly coloured Amalfi coast. Long, warm summers spent aboard yachts and in villas gave him time to earn the trust of his very private subjects. The resulting images convey not just the heady…
