What does freedom mean to you? I think I have taken my freedom for granted over the years – the freedom to explore foreign lands in an RV on a solo budget, jump on a yacht and sail across the Atlantic Ocean or hitch a ride through the dry, sun bleached scrub of the Australian bush — these are all experiences that are knitted through the fabric of my existence that seem like a normal part of growing up, yet this freedom I have experienced would not exist if it weren’t for the men and women who fought for this land and country — our Anzacs. As Malcolm Street states in this issue’s ‘Street Talk’ (p.16), “… we are still dealing with the same problems that were happening in post-WWII…

surge in young families caravanning

Anew surge of Australian families are road-tripping the country, and some are even abandoning their aspirations of home ownership to fund their adventure. Melbourne locals the Sutic family sold their family home in Officer, Melbourne, to purchase a caravan. They're currently on the road with their two young children Tilly and Mila aged four and two respectively. “Last year we decided to just do it — we sold everything,” Mrs Sutic said. “We thought there was no better time than the present to explore the country... People don’t realise what beautiful places we have right on our doorstep — you just have to go out and discover them. “The kids are absolutely loving the adventure, especially the trips to the beach — we’ve already booked in to finish up our lap at Broulee just…

editorial apology: explorex caravans

An article featured in Caravan World 584 wrongly referred to Perth-based caravan manufacturer Explorex Caravans as Explorer Caravans. The article was featured on page 11 and was entitled 'Small WA manufacturer helps fight war against meth'. We'd like to formally apologise to Explorex Caravans for this mistake. Explorex Caravans have showcased their newly released 18ft Numbat at the Perth Caravan & Camping Show in March, as a part of their ‘Adventure Series’. The Numbat comes in single or tandem axle configurations and is the perfect fit for those wanting to move up from a camper trailer or small pop-top caravan - the perfect size van for those wanting quick weekend getaways or extended offroad touring. To find out more about the Explorex Caravans range, visit…

veteran suicide memorials unvieled in barcaldine

Several new memorials to honour service men and women, and civilians who have fallen to suicide will be erected in Barcaldine Shire towns on Anzac Day. RVers are invited to attend the unveiling of the five new memorials in the towns of Muttaburra, Jericho, Alpha, Barcaldine and Aramac. Vietnam veteran Clarence Ormsby has been leading the project to install the memorials across the Baraldine communities, and has been advocating the acknowledgement of veteran suicide for many years. Clarence himself lost a fellow soldier to suicide just weeks after they both survived the 1968 Battle of Balmoral. “Unfortunately, suicide has been a part of our Commonwealth history since the First World War to the present time” says Clarence. Research by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in 2018 revealed that from 2001 to…

bumper turnoutat gold coast caravan and outdoor expo

'Carafans' descended on the Gold Coast Caravan and Outdoor Expo in March in exceptionally large numbers, with 15,000 people attending the show in total, a 26 per cent increase on previous years. Families, nomads, and young caravanners enjoyed displays from 120 exhibitors, showcasing over 500 recreational vehicles, ranging in price from $10,999 to $350,000. “We experienced record-breaking attendance at this year’s Gold Coast Caravan and Outdoor Expo, highlighting that just like a caravan or camping holiday, no matter the weather, the ‘vanlife’ has a high appeal, particularly amongst families,” said Caravanning Queensland general manager Jason Plant. “The event saw more families and young couples than ever before flood through the gates of Gold Coast’s Metricon Stadium, with attendees and exhibitors alike expressing their delight at the variety of product on display from a…

Australian RV manufacturer Jayco has launched its first offroad hybrid product, the CrossTrak. The hybrid was revealed to the public at the Victorian Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow in February. It weighs in at 1,150kg Tare, with a payload of 450kg. Jayco Australia CEO Garry Moore says Jayco has been researching the off-road hybrid RV category for quite some time, to meet the growing popularity of hybrids in Australia. “Jayco has a strong reputation as industry leaders in research and development, and it was only a matter of time before we could offer a high quality offroad product in the form of the Jayco CrossTrak,” says Moore. “The hybrid camper category is popular due to its compact and lightweight benefits and we wanted to ensure Jayco was responsible for producing the best offroad hybrid…
