When putting together feature stories on classic cars, complementing the actual story with a full list of technical specifications used to be something of a chore, especially if you were seeking information on a lesser-known model. In essence, it meant that maintaining a large library of motoring books and magazines could be seen as somewhat essential. When Chrysler launched the Valiant in Australia in 1962, they had an instant winner on their hands with demand constantly outstripping supply. Part of the reason for the Valiant’s success was its superb US-sourced 225ci slant-six engine. With 108kW on tap, this engine had around double the output of its contemporary Holden rivals at the time. However, the Australian Government demanded a 95 per cent local content for car manufacturers, so a long-term alternative had to be found. Fortunately, the parent company in the US had been developing a new six-cylinder engine for a range of commercial vehicles and offered the project to Chrysler Australia. This fantastic little racer started its life in Michigan, where an original Model A Ford was stripped down to be built into what is considered one of the most well-proportioned speedsters or racers. Built as a dual-purpose vehicle it was used in classic racing as well as on the street for parades and touring. Over time the car made its way to the UK before Bob found it and sent it to its new home in New Zealand. Mail: Email: Facebook: MONZA MEMORIES With reference to Allan Dick’s write up on the Monza Ferrari (NZ Classic Driver May/June 2019), the photo of Ken Wharton looking down in the cockpit of the Ferrari was one of my photos, along with others taken before his terrible accident at Ardmore. A few people that I showed the photo to commented about the ‘halo’ that appears above Wharton’s head, saying things like “spooky” or an “ominous sign” or an “omen” as his fatal accident was shortly after this photo was taken. I explained that it was actually a coincidence and that the ‘halo’ was in fact a white paint marking on the circuit (that also shows up in other photos I took) and bore no relation to something ominous, and that those speculations were best left to people…
