editor’s note

In this issue, our Fashion & Portrait issue, I interview photographer Chris Buck on capturing portraits of U.S. presidents, like the one on this page, of president George H.W. Bush. Buck has a larger body of work, though, of another group of very visible subjects: Namely, celebrities. Our cover photo—Buck’s portrait of actor Nick Offerman, star of the hit TV sitcom “Parks and Recreation,” who Buck depicts wearing an old-fashioned collar that you might see in a Rembrandt painting—is a great example of Buck’s celebrity work. In tone, the cover and the portrait on this page are quite different. And since you can read more about the challenges of shooting presidential portraits later on in this issue, I’ll use the rest of this column to discuss the cover shot. When I asked Buck about the…

maria svarbova: frozen in time and space

Slovakian photographer Maria Svarbova knew from an early age that she was going to be an artist. The only question was which medium would she use as a means of self-expression? Within less than a decade of “discovering” photography as her chosen medium in 2010, she has garnered the prestigious Hasselblad Master award, had her images grace the pages of magazines around the globe, including Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and published her first book, “Swimming Pool,” with a touring exhibition. The secrets to her success include an incredible sense of design and a singular vision. It’s why she’s sought after by collectors who pay attention to her entire body of work, rather than single images, and photo editors and art directors who do their hiring based on her clearly defined vision and…

sarah silver: moving beauty

Sarah Silver’s love of photography began in her grandfather’s darkroom. This love has never waned, but she has explored dramatically different genres of the visual medium throughout her career. The New York City-based photographer/director began her career as a photojournalist covering the Middle East, which perhaps isn’t surprising when you consider that she was born in Tokyo and globe-trotted with her parents on her father’s overseas stints for the United Nations. But it was in the Big Apple that her love of dance and photography came together and refocused her visual direction into the world of motion, fashion and beauty. Named a Hasselblad Master, Silver has a commercial client list ranging from Aveda and L’Oréal to Proenza Schouler and Swarovski and editorial work from Allure and The New York Times to Vanity Fair…
