In the 1950's, DRUM was a pioneer of black journalism bringing together courageous investigative journalism and cutting-edge photojournalism for Africa. But DRUM isn't just about history. South Africa has changed a lot in the last 50 years, and DRUM has kept pace with these changes. Today it is a thoroughly modern magazine in touch with its readers. Our recipe for success is simple but effective: we give our readers what they want.

grateful for friendship

After losing a close friend who was murdered in a hijacking I have been broken. I’ve been thinking about him a lot, and it has hit me really hard that I never really thanked him for being part of my life. The bond we shared was beyond friendship. He was family to me. All my childhood memories have him as that one constant person who was always by my side. I was an only child but I didn’t even realise it. We held hands when we went to school and we fought each other’s battles. I miss his voice, his texts and tags on his social media posts. Some stupid people took his life. They don’t know we promised each other that we would grow old together. Whenever I see friends eating together, talking and laughing,…

your opinions

Rapper Nasty C says the older generation is to blame for the nastiness often found on social media. DRUM readers shared their thoughts too. Personally, I think his statement is very accurate! MABAKOENA MWALE MOTSEKI No! This new generation thinks they know more than the older generation, you will reap what you sow. LAPOLOGANG MUDONGO He should have said, “we were given too much freedom, that’s why we can’t express ourselves without cursing!” VUKILE MORRIS The very people you’re insulting are the reason your album went triple platinum. OFENTSE TSWAI The current generation must own up to all these social ills. It is this generation passing judgement on others, hurling insults, teasing, making others feel small to boost their egos. It is this generation that designed a picture of what a cool youth should look like, what they should…

life is as it’s meant to be

‘Most of my life lessons, such as self-love, were learnt the hard way’ SHE’S set to star in a new soap about a makoti – and if her hunky new man has his way wedding bells may soon ring in real life for Tina Jaxa. It’s no secret that the actress has been unlucky in love – her messy break-up with husband Prosper Mkwaiwa was well documented in the media. In 2015 the businessman died of an undisclosed illness. At the time of his death Prosper was legally married to Tina but was in a traditional union with musician and socialite Tina Dlangwana. Now, it seems, Tina may have found her happily ever after in the beefy arms of Generations: The Legacy actor Fuzile Mahamba. They’ve been dating for six months and Tina couldn’t…
