READNorwegian photographer Anja Niemi starts with found objects, then invents characters to fit them. A suitcase owned by a ’50s beauty consultant—and its evocation of what Niemi has called “a woman’s failed attempt at success”—inspired her series Darlene & Me. A vintage pink dress was the starting point for She Could Have Been a Cowboy (left). These and four more series are collected in her monograph, Anja Niemi: In Character.ESCAPEWhether you’re planning your next vacation or simply in search of a mental break, Gray Malin: Italy, featuring the photographer’s cheerful aerial shots of the bel paese’s popular seaside resorts, is sure to inspire. (abramsbooks.com)Few designers are as committed to a particular aesthetic as Lisa Perry, whose ’60s-inspired label embodies all things Mod. The new book Lisa Perry: Fashion, Homes, Design…

In Joanne Ramos’s chilling debut novel The Farm, which explores themes similar to those in The Handmaid’s Tale, a young Filipina immigrant heads to a luxury retreat where women serve as surrogates for the ultrarich. But separated from her own daughter, she soon discovers the terrible costs that come with being considered a commodity rather than a person. The disappearance of two young sisters from a close-knit community in Russia serves as the impetus for a rumination on women’s lives in this debut novel by Julia Phillips. Through the perspectives of neighbors, mothers, siblings, and others, Disappearing Earth evokes the ways in which a single event can reverberate. The result is a book that Sloane Crosley declares is “a feat of literary suspense.”Earrings: Gillian Milberg for Ok Fine; ring: courtesy of…

MCNITT WITH HER GRANDFATHER, JIM.“ELIZA’S GROUNDBREAKING WORK IN VR IS REALLY REIMAGINING FILMMAKING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION,” SAYS DANIEL PALTRIDGE, PRESIDENT OF BULGARI NORTH AMERICA, “AND I APPLAUD HER DETERMINATION AND ACHIEVEMENTS ACROSS NOT JUST ONE, BUT TWO FIELDS THAT HAVE BEEN TRADITIONALLY DOMINATED BY MALE VOICES.”Before the VR experience Spheres arrived at the Sundance Film Festival last year, it was already generating buzz. A three-part series produced by Darren Aronofsky and narrated by Patti Smith, Jessica Chastain, and Millie Bobby Brown, it takes viewers on a trip through the cosmos that involves falling into a black hole and culminates with a message about the fragility of our environment. “I wanted to tell an emotional story that made people think about our brief time on this planet and our impact…

swan song

One of the highlights of my career has been having Karl Lagerfeld collaborate with ELLE. Just last year, he photographed Nicki Minaj for our July 2018 cover. It was an extraordinary pairing—the King of Fashion with the Queen of Rap. A few months later, Karl would shoot for ELLE again, this time a portfolio of Chanel’s cruise collection, photographed in his own garden outside Paris. At his urging, we included his colleague Virginie Viard, not knowing then that she would succeed him as the house’s artistic director upon his death last February. He also asked that we feature the young violinist Charlie Siem. For Karl, music was always crucial to telling a story. In his tribute to his late friend, ELLE’s creative director, Stephen Gan, recalls Karl’s talent for bringing high…
