“The Third Kind…”Buying a new firearm is not unlike many other retail purchases…sometimes it’s an informed, practical, thoroughly researched act, other times it’s a “Shiny…Sparkly…Weee-Doggy, I like the looks of that!” impulse buy, and then there’s a third kind. The psychology of this third type of purchase is not as easily explained and comes from a deeper place in your psyche. Whether that special or unique firearm spurs your imagination with its potential as your partner in high adventure, feats of marksmanship, or stirs vivid echoes and fond memories of the past and an offer to rekindle them, the contrast is clear and definitive…this third type of purchase is special.Sometimes, a story must be told in order to tell the story…and so it is with how I came to…

the bear hammer!

There are two sure ways to start a fight: 1) Mention to Sean Connery that his Russian accent in Hunt for Red October and valiant attempt to sound Spanish in Highlander were as lame as his impersonation of an Asian in You Only Live Twice. Or, 2) Tell another shooter what firearm is “the best” and why they should carry it.Many Things In Life Are Unpredictable Or Unexpected.Like your favorite, long-term college girlfriend, after one too many sips of Pinot Noir, confessing to your good ‘ol Mom and Dad that she doesn’t have to worry about paying off student loans because she makes plenty of money from her part-time job…as an exotic dancer…on Christmas Eve…at the family dinner table.Or what you once believed was your super-smart, could have been…

dogged determination

A behind-the-scenes shot of John Wick 3 , filming in New York, from Xtreme Props and Weapons which supplied the guns for the main characters. Last year, for Firearms News, I wrote a two-part feature entitled Movie Recommendations for Gun Guys that was somehow overlooked by the Pulitzer Prize folks. If you missed it, in the first section I listed the movies that I felt were absolutely required viewing for pro-gun, right-thinking Americans, as they are essential parts of American gun culture — 1984’s Red Dawn (Patrick Swayze), 1990’s Quigley Down Under (Tom Selleck), 1990’s Tremors (Kevin Bacon), 1995’s Heat (DeNiro and Pacino), and the new title on the list, 2014’s John Wick (Keanu Reeves). As I explained, the original John Wick flew under everyone’s radar and, from the trailers,…

hard times armory select-fire inglis high-power

I’ve been working on a book on the Browning High-Power and decided that a section on full auto High-Powers should be included. As a friend has a pair of select-fire ones built by Hard Times Armory, probably the best-known maker of full auto High-Powers, I asked my friend to bring them along for me to shoot.J.D. Farmer, the owner of Hard Times Armory in Kennesaw, GA, was known for converting various weapons to full-auto. He was also known in the full-auto community for his suit against the federal government opposing the 1986 freeze on registering new machine guns for civilian sales. He won in district court, but the decision was overturned on appeal. The U.S. Supreme court declined to hear the case; hence the ban remained in effect. Farmer…

missouri’s hb786: a defiant beacon of hope for 2nd amendment supporters

One of the biggest issues facing freedom-loving Americans, as well as those in favor or less government involvement in their daily lives, is that of state’s rights. And few issues are more demonstrative of the effects of overreaching federal government than that of firearms legislation. From the original 1934 National Firearms Act, to the most recent ban on bumpfire stocks, the Federal government has a long history of domineering the opinions of a select few on the entire nation. This, in spite of the 10th Amendment. “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” - 10th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. In more common parlance,…

global socialist, prime minister jacinda ardern, leads new zealand disarmament drive

“More than 11,000 people have signed a petition against proposed tougher gun laws in the wake of the Christchurch mosque massacres, criticizing the changes as ‘unjust to law-abiding New Zealand citizens,’” CNN reports. The petition, promoted by Gun City, the retailer where the killer bought four of his firearms, calls for, among other things, an “independent inquiry” on how the killer got New Zealand gun licenses, an “accurate description” of the guns the government is going after, and raises compensation questions. What it does not do is protest the fact that guns are being scapegoated and gun owners punished, and rally opposition to any restrictions. The Virtue SignalersIndeed, with Martin Taylor, chief executive of the 150,000 member Fish and Game New Zealand announcing “[W]e support the need to change gun…
