I can remember many times as a child when I quite literally jumped for joy. There was the time I bagged second prize in the school art competition and was rewarded with a mind-blowing $10, and the time my teacher forgot to call on me in the speech contest. As a teenager, I bounced up and down involuntarily when I learnt I got ‘Honours’ for my elementary ballet exam (the result of my previous exam was a very disappointing ‘Pass Plus’) and again when I heard I would be heading to Germany on exchange. What a well-informed, amazing magazine you produce. It is packed with so much relevant information for New Zealanders. In saying that, I thought us like-minded women would be interested in some information I learned today. My sister-in-law is currently in hospital receiving a blood transfusion and I was alarmed to discover that less than four percent of eligible New Zealanders are blood donors. GOING GREEN Looking out at your garden from your home comes with more benefits than a nice view. A study from the University of Plymouth in the UK suggests that such passive enjoyment of green spaces can help to reduce cravings for unhealthy things, such as snacks, tobacco or alcohol. Researchers asked 149 participants about their exposure to nature, as well as how much green space was present in their neighbourhoods and whether they accessed it. They found that participants who had access to a garden – whether private or a community space – reported having less frequent and less intense cravings, and those whose homes looked over a large amount of green space (making up around 25 percent of the views) also saw similar benefits.
