OCTAVIA DICKINSON Interior decorator ‘I’d always spend time decorating my new room at school to make it homely,’ says Octavia Dickinson. ‘I did not realise this would become my career until I’d left my job as an art researcher and was lucky enough to meet interior designer Cindy Leveson, who scooped me up.’ Octavia set up her own interiors practice last year and has since taken on the decoration of an Oxfordshire cottage, a London dining room and a boy’s bedroom in Chelsea. ‘My family home is my biggest inspiration,’ she says. ‘My father always has a new addition to his collection – be it an Old Master drawing he found in an auction house, or a lovely chair bought from a local antique shop.’ The decoration of her own London…

My childhood holidays were spent on the North Cornwall coast. Each year, my father would drive his fairly scruffy boat down and we would head out mackerel fishing and lobster potting. Some years, we caught so many mackerel we would have to give them away and it was always very exciting hauling up the pots to find a lobster. I confess to having had a romantic idea of becoming a fisherwoman when I grew up, so the decoration team’s decision to take their highlights of the new fabric collections to Cornwall and transform them into the accoutrements of fishing life plays right to my heart (from page 121). NEW LAUNCH THE HOUSE & GARDEN COLLECTION This month sees the debut of House & Garden’s first foray into product design. The House & Garden Collection, launching at Decorex, has been designed in collaboration with sofa company Arlo & Jacob, and offers a range of smart sofas and armchairs that are well priced and beautifully made. After 70 years of showcasing the best in design and decoration, we feel we know a thing or two about what makes an elegant and comfortable place to sit. So it seemed only natural to apply this trained eye to designing our own range of furniture.
