rest & replenish

Welcome to this cosy, hug of an issue. It’s cold outside and the nights are long, which means making the time to nourish our body and mind is more important than ever. This issue is all about listening to and loving your body. If you’re pushing yourself too hard, can you give yourself permission to slow down, to allow yourself to rest and replenish? It’s the only way to avoid that boom and bust cycle, says Dr Lucy Maddox on page 30 (you know the one: you’ve been super busy and the moment you take a holiday you get sick, so you end up back in your usual routine feeling not very rested at all). Fitness expert Tally Rye agrees, and her intuitive attitude to getting active (page 48) is…

your thoughts…

2020 vision I recently bought your magazine as I was interested in the vision board, which I feel is just the thing I needed to finally get me focussed. The first thing that I put in the ‘Feel challenged’ section is pole fit dance classes. My muscles ache just typing this but it’s worth it! I feel better already just from exercising and trying something new that I believe I will stick to. Alexandra Smith, via email Paper post Hello folks – I just wanted to say how lovely it was to receive the magazine in a paper envelope! Ramaa Ramesh, via Instagram Mindful moods I’ve just written a post in my Facebook group on navigating our ever-changing moods mindfully – and then I read a beautiful piece of writing by Kiran Sidhu in In The Moment…

We’ve all heard about the importance of looking after our gut biome, but our social biome is a new one to us. Researchers Jeffrey Hall and Andy Merolla coined the term during their recent study, and it’s all about finding balance between social interaction and time alone. “Healthy social biomes consist of more frequent and longer interactions,” they explain, “but people [in the study] with the healthiest social biomes had more choice about how and when they interacted.” Spending time on meaningful relationships, rather than making small talk with larger groups of people, was also key. Find out more about the study on YouTube – search ‘Mapping the Social Biome’…

eco tripping

Taking a road trip might not seem an eco-friendly way to travel, but pumping fuel in a gas station is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Countries all over the world are championing exploration by electric vehicle, adding charge stations at regular intervals along well-known car crusades, as well as mapping out brand new routes to discover. Try the E-Grand tour in Switzerland, spanning 1600km of dramatic mountain views, vibrant cities and calming blue coastlines (grandtour.myswitzerland.com). Key things to know before you set off? Research how many charges your ride will need for your journey and where to find stations so you don’t get caught short of power.…

oh happy days

1 Oil up! Studies suggest that adding oil to your salad will help you to absorb more of the good in your greens, specifically eight nutrients including vits E and K. The study used soya oil but the researchers recommend opting for olive because of its numerous health benefits. 2 Wear a mask on the mat. Popping on a hair mask before you head to yoga class is said to reduce that post-sweat frizz and help your hair soak up all its goodness as you get warmer by sealing the cuticle and reducing moisture and nutrient loss. It’s worth a try for luscious locks! 3 Get social. Although we often encourage you to take a break from your notifications, a new study has found that spending time chatting on WhatsApp could actually…
