bike airbag or lifejacket?

Motorbike airbag vests have been moving into the mainstream in recent years thanks to a wider range of manufacturers launching their own versions at more accessible prices. But not all of the items you see for sale online are what they seem. If you stick ‘motorbike airbag’ into Google, several of the top shopping results from online sellers offer similar looking systems for incredibly low prices. Although they are available under several different brand names, the images used are similar, if not identical and often feature an item branded ‘Huanqiu’. Online seller Wish offered the vest for £81.76, which is certainly eye-catching compared to the £569.99 Alpinestars Tech Air 5 system next to it. The item from Wish used a lanyard trigger system rather than an electronic brain, but comparable systems from…

lots of tech in a small package

After 35 years of dedicated service, Harley-Davidson have retired the air-cooled Evolution engine from their Sportster range with full honours. In its place comes the Revolution Max 1250T: a torque rich, watercooled V-twin with variable valve timing and heaps more power. Based on the 1250 from the Pan America, the 1250T is a modified version of an engine that’s already earned high praise, bringing a torquier but less powerful delivery more suited to the cruiser platform. So how have they done it? The folks in Milwaukee explain all. “We always start with research to figure out the voice of the customer,” says Kyle Wick, Chief Engineer at H-D. “We start at a really high level and then distil it down into how it accelerates, or the feeling when it vibrates. Then…

Every week we give a different rider a wodge of fictional cash and ask them to ‘buy’ the bike that sets their soul on fire. This is Saul’s pick... Saul Towers has been Sales Manager at Flitwick Motorcycles since 1997, so has seen more than his fair share of both brand new and used bikes. Buying, selling and even cleaning bikes, Saul has been involved in the industry all his working life. So what would be his choice of used bike? Yamaha’s smash-hit naked... “In a work context, at the moment I’d buy any used bike offered to me because the market is so busy. Japanese, European, even Chinese bikes, we will take anything as demand is outstripping supply,” says Saul. “But if I was spending my own money, I’d buy a…

jenny tinmouth

People who have shaped our world ‘Tom Cruise is a proper adrenaline junkie… really cool’ Jenny Tinmouth has been successful in every area of biking, yet as she sits in her workshop with a full diary, she’s as humble as ever. The multiple Guinness World Record holder fell in love with bikes because of her father and the memories of going to Matchless rallies. With F1, World Superbikes and MotoGP on TV every weekend, it was only a matter of time before a young Jenny thought: ‘I have no idea how to do that but I’d like to have a try,’ quickly followed by: ‘If I’m going to race then I need to know how to fix my own bike.’ Those thoughts drove her, and she ventured into her mechanical education. “I was really…
