wake up!

ADMIT IT, YOUR brain filled in the rest. Few bands to make it big in metal have done so through playing to convention, but in a music scene built on curios and one-offs, even fewer artists remain as unique, as compelling and as utterly fascinating as System Of A Down. Their unprecedented and unmistakable take on heavy metal still, to this day, places them in a genre of one, and 20 years after Toxicity took them stratospheric, it remains one of the most vital, enthralling and batshit bonkers metal records of all time. It’s why we’ve dedicated this month’s cover to it, courtesy of Dave Everley’s excellent and eye-opening feature. Also in this issue, you’ll find some of our coverage of last month’s historic Download Pilot event. I cannot begin to…

meet the band

DOM LAWSON WRITER Dom knows a thing or two about death metal. Actually, he knows all the things about death metal, so who better to talk to the legendary At The Gates about an album that he puts shoulder to shoulder with every album they’ve produced so far? Yes, including that one. ELIZABETH SCARLETT WRITER Lizzie took a break from hammering out news stories for our parent brand Louder by joining the Hammer Squad for June’s Download Pilot! Given that a month before the festival happened, we didn’t even know if we’d get any fests this summer, that’s a solid result. EMMA JOHNSTON WRITER This month, we paired Emma with the one and only Backxwash to find out more about her amazing story, the mind-boggling range of influences that go into her music, and why…

It kicked off an emotional weekend that we’ll never forget, and brought new hope to the possibility of live music returning to the UK. Turn to page 46 to find out exactly how it all went down.…

bloodstock is back!

THE RETURN OF 10,000 overjoyed fans to Donington for the Download Pilot in mid-June represented an incredible turning point for the UK’s live music industry. After all, this wasn’t just the first time a multi-day music event had happened in almost 18 months; it was also a signal that such events could happen. Summer 2021 may look desolate thanks to numerous cancellations arising from uncertainty around the pandemic, but for Bloodstock, the UK’s biggest dedicated metal fest, the Download Pilot has given them renewed hope. “Wasn’t it wonderful?” beams Vicky Hungerford, one of Bloodstock’s directing team. “I’m literally buzzing, though I’m also knackered!” At the time of this magazine going to press, Bloodstock is set to return between August 11 and 15, and the 2021 event is envisioned to be the biggest…

do twin temple eat seitan?

SATANIC DOO-WOP WAITS for no man and, indeed, no global pandemic. While the world stood still, metal’s new obsession, Twin Temple, took the creative process into their own hands and crafted new single Babalon. To celebrate the start of their next era, we asked the mysterious husband and wife duo Alexandra and Zachary James all your burning questions about Satanism, the musical inspirations behind their unique sound and exactly where they get their extravagant stage gear. What kinds of backlash or criticism have you had to deal with from the music industry and people in general, being open about Satanism? Did it ever affect getting gigs? @LadyDeath1919 (Twitter) ZACHARY: “In the beginning, some people in the industry said, ‘This is trash, you guys are crazy, you’ll never have success.’” ALEXANDRA: “So we thought, ‘Great,…
