Until I saw photos of Mary Barra riding through Times Square in a camouflaged C8 prototype, I figured the rumors of a mid-engine Corvette were just that: rumors. You know the phrase, “Once bitten, twice shy”? “Twice” doesn’t begin to cover the number of mid-engine Corvette development cars that have been created over the years. Many of them landed on magazine covers with an announcement like, “The Mid-Engine Corvette Is Here!” So I was skeptical until seeing those NYC photos. If you’re showing off a prototype to the president and CEO of General Motors, in one of the busiest, most crowded places on the planet, you have to have some sort of intent. UNUSUAL EXPERIENCE Just received the July MCR with the article on the Boss 429 [“Lost Muscle: Boss 429 Job 1”]. I can’t help you find that car, but I had an unusual Mustang experience. We bought a 1969 Mustang convertible (351W/four-speed) on December 26, 1968, at Graef Ford in Bolivar (out of business now), which is a few miles south of Akron/Canton Ohio. When we were back at that dealership for some warranty work, we noticed in the wash area a new black 1969 Mustang fastback with no markings on it at all—no Mustang badge, no numbers, no chrome, nothing. We were out cruising and went by Sites Brothers Chrysler-Plymouth [in Kansas City, Missouri]. There sat a 1967 GTX in pale yellow. We stopped by and said we wanted a test drive. This 300-pound gorilla salesman rode shotgun, I was the driver, and my sister Linda was in the back seat.
