overnight success stories are rare…

The road to a successful career making or producing music is fraught with challenges, not least the fundamental difficulty that many face developing a sound or USP of their own. In the wise words of this month’s cover star, however, often the best way to find your voice as a musician or a producer is to allow yourself the option of making mistakes. “Finding a sound takes time,” superstar Steve Aoki tells us. “Finding my sound took a long time, actually. I found my sound through trial and error.” Steve speaks to us at length in this issue about his astonishing career and how he successfully operates as a musician, DJ and producer simultaneously in an ever-changing industry. Elsewhere this issue, in the first of a new series, Adam Crute explores key…

BOOTH GROOVES Our resident Eurorack polymath Dave Gale was on the ground at Superbooth 2019, which took place at FEZ Berlin in May – here, he presents his top picks from Europe’s premier modular-synth show… A side from the bigger, more ‘mainstream’ releases at the Superbooth show from the likes of IK Multimedia, Steinberg and Pioneer, there was a gamut of products from the Eurorack world that hooked my attention. It might have been slightly colder than the Berlin seasonal average on the outside, but inside, SB19’s temperature was rising to the tune of electronic bleeps and clangs, with an ever-increasing number of Eurorack companies vying for attention. Steve Aoki is such a huge star in EDM, it can be hard to think of him as a teenager struggling to find success in a hardcore-punk band. But that’s exactly how he got his start in the music industry. Both Aoki and Dim Mak have evolved enormously since then. The label, having had its first taste of mainstream success releasing Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm in the US, is now a major force in breaking new talents including The Chainsmokers and Zedd and releasing records for the likes of Battles, Gossip and MSTRKRFT.…
