find your summer glow!

Do you ever look back at your teenage self in horror, cringing at some of the crazy things you did in the name of beauty? Top of my list was the ol’ baby oil, used during lunchbreak to bake schoolgirl shins to the same hue as a roast turkey. (Of course, we didn’t know then quite how insane it was.) Since then the beauty industry has invested billions of dollars in scientific research to develop ever-more effective ways to nourish and protect our skin and we are all the beneficiaries. Nowadays we have products with ‘active’ ingredients that have revolutionised skincare. I know from your emails that many of you, like me, are a bit cynical about some of the claims made by beauty products. So how do you work out…

over to you

Winner! FINDING COURAGE I have been reading your magazine since 2008 and I frequently look back over past issues, following your great advice. At 49 I had considered myself to be healthy but now I’ve been diagnosed with a 9.5cm cyst on my right ovary. Since the word ‘cancer’ was dropped, everything has become a blur. Today I am reading my back copies of Prevention and am inspired by the stories of courageous women, their health scares, and how they came back fighting. Thank you Prevention for turning around my thought processes. I know whatever the outcome of the next few weeks I will never give up the positive thoughts and the fight in me. Claire O’Shea, QLD THE POWER OF POSITIVITY I really loved the article about taming your brain in the latest issue…

Happiness held is the seed; happiness shared is the flower.Author John Harrigan HAPPY CAMPERS Feel like holidays are more stressful than restful? They don’t have to be. Caravan and camping trips can leave us happier, more satisfied and healthier than if we choose to not head out into nature, according to the Caravan Industry Association of Australia. Taking a simple holiday and leaving behind long flights and crowded hotels is the perfect way to recharge batteries, according to three quarters of the women responding to a survey. Over half felt it made them fitter, while two-thirds found camping relieves stress. If that’s not a good enough reason to load up your swag, we don’t know what is. Go ahead, dance like no one is watching There’s no mood-booster quite like dancing around the room…

your body on a binge

BRAIN A surge of dopamine in your brain’s reward centres triggers pleasure. Mmmm… You want more. MOUTH To break down the sugar stuck to your teeth, mouth bacteria produces acid which, unchecked, increases cavity risk. STRESS The sugar burst triggers release of the stress hormones, cortisol and adrenalin. This causes a rapid increase in energy, heartbeat and perspiration. Suddenly you may find yourself feeling jittery. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Sweet junk foods are broken down quickly, leaving you hungry again within a few hours. The sugar also feeds bacteria in the gut linked to weight gain and diabetes Type 2. FAT CELLS Your body breaks the sugar down into glycogen, which is stored in your muscles. The excess is turned by your liver into fat and gets stored in your fat cells within four to eight hours of your binge. MOOD Your pancreas…

weigh up the benefits

Looking for the most effective way to burn kilojoules? Get off the bike and pick up some weights. A new study from Auckland has discovered there’s a 56 per cent higher surge in human growth hormone (HGH) after resistance training compared to steady cardio – despite the same number of kilojoules being burnt during your workout. HGH helps you build muscle, meaning your body will burn more kilojoules long-term. So don’t be misled by the lower step count on your trusty fitness tracker. OLD DOG NEW TRICKS Man’s best friend could also be your best fitness buddy. A new study in Nature found that not only can a pet pooch provide incentive for more activity, they can even extend your lifespan. The results come from the Swedish Twin Register, comparing the lifestyle…
