W e were happy to get our interview and shoot with this month’s cover star, Tom Dumoulin, at short notice after his spectacular Giro d’Italia win. He has emerged as one of cycling’s most dynamic talents, and his win in Italy had it all. Comparisons were made with Miguel Indurain and Bradley Wiggins, his antecedants – superb rouleurs who built the resilience to contend over three weeks. However, I felt Dumoulin was a more human champion than his two forebears, who were tactically unexciting and generally defensive riders. Yes, he trounced everybody with a TT performance for the ages through the vineyards of Perugia. He was astonishing in overhauling Nairo Quintana at Oropa. T he Tour de Suisse, with its backdrop of lush green, meadows, spectacular mountains and pristine roads, may be cycling’s most beautiful and telegenic race, writes Richard Moore. But like so many recent editions, the 2017 edition was not a reliable form indicator for the Tour de France. Suisse could be seen as the cycling equivalent of Paris Hilton. Or, indeed, Filippo Pozzato. They look fabulous but what are they actually for? Beyond looking fabulous, what is their purpose? The race predates the Vuelta by two years, and some still refer to it as the fourth Grand Tour, but that is a claim that seems difficult to justify these days. L ast month the UCI-led committee that makes race rule changes at WorldTour level announced that in 2018, Grand Tour teams will be limited to eight riders per squad, or 176 riders per race. And in other WT and Conti races the field will be capped at 176 riders. The UCI’s stated reason is that it will make racing safer. It’s a dubious proposition. The bad crashes happen where the fight for position is fiercest - towards the front. A peloton of 176 fit and motivated men will fill all the available ‘best’ space just as effectively as 198. The peloton is merely shorter, not less dense. (Though, of course, it could alleviate the collateral damage: the domino effect.) Nevertheless, riders might prefer to have seen more action on the…

Meet the 20-year-old ex-mountain-biker from Northern California Give a flavour of his results… He had a breakout year with the Axeon Hagens Berman squad in 2016, with victory in the Joe Martin Stage Race and ninth overall at the Tour of California, when he was just 19. In the autumn he was second in the Tour de l’Avenir’s 16.5km TT and won the queen stage to Saint-Sorlind’Arves. He’s been equally impressive this year with a win in the opening stage of the revived Baby Giro, now known as the Giro Ciclistico d’Italia one of three so far. What’s his background?
