what you should be talking about this month

IT WAS unfortunate timing. As July began, women’s soccer was still making positive headlines as their World Cup rushed to its big conclusion over in France. Meanwhile, complaints were being aired about the summer competition between women’s rugby’s top outfits in California. Kiwi broadcaster Scotty Stevenson took to Twitter to vent his frustration, rattling off concerns about San Diego’s Chula Vista centre, the venue for the Super Series between Canada, England, France, New Zealand and the USA. In a thread the presenter said: “The playing field in San Diego? It’s been described as barely fit for a training run. And it’s a training field.” He added: “The changing sheds? A tent with a portable toilet. I can’t actually retype that. I’m shaking my head too much.” He also mentioned that fans had…

“every team is raising the bar for japan 2019”

WHILE MANY of us are thinking about summer holidays or making the most of the weekend sunshine, rugby’s top players are being put through gruelling regimes to ensure they are in the best shape possible for the World Cup. Every four years coaches come up with new ways to get their team fit and firing, while players raise the bar as they compete for a place in their nation’s 31-man squad for the global showpiece. No one wants to put all the hard work in and then not make the plane to Japan. We got a fantastic insight into Wales’ preparations with an access-all-areas pass to their training camp – find out more on P50-55 – and selection calls are going to be hard for Warren Gatland and the 19 other head…

“in florence last year i had a bit of a panic attack in a lift”

What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen on the pitch? When Benetton played the Scarlets away, George Clancy was the referee. He said something to one of our props, something like “work on your bind”. But our prop doesn’t understand any English so he just went up to him, said he was sorry and tried to hug him! Who are the jokers in the team? With Benetton, Ian McKinley loves pranking guys, hiding their shoes in the gym, etc. He’s a good laugh. And with the national team me and Jake Polledri are partners in crime, always winding up people. Any pranks that you can share? One day one of the conditioning coaches had some hurdles out by the side of the field and one of our wings ran straight into them, just off…
