adjusting to retirement

When it comes to preparing for retirement, it’s likely that you have taken care of all the practical concerns, such as arranging your finance, handing over work tasks and maybe even downsizing your home. But what many of us are not prepared for is the emotional impact that the transition from full-time work to full-time retirement can have. It is a major life event, and like any life-changing situation it can come with its highs and lows. After years of working long hours and adhering to a strict daily schedule, the thought of being free to do as you wish every day can seem like a dream. You’ve probably spent time thinking about the hobbies you want to take up, the places you want to visit and the books you’re going…

5 ways to be mindful every day

1 MORNING FOCUS Every morning, start the day with five minutes of meditation. This helps you to get into the right mindset for the day. You can do this in bed before getting up; just lie still for a few minutes, concentrate on your breath and empty your mind of any worries or thoughts. 2 GET OUTSIDE Every day, plan something that will get you outside, whether it’s a walk to the shops or a hike around your local heathland. Spending time in nature lifts our moods and decreases stress. Take in all the things you can see and hear, and absorb yourself in where you are. 3 ENJOY YOUR FOOD Cooking and eating are great ways to practise mindfulness. Focus on the ingredients, the process of cooking a healthy meal and eat slowly. Enjoy…

finding purpose when you have retired

While people still working may imagine retirement to be an endless holiday, it can actually be a deeply challenging time for those who are making the transition from full or part-time work. The most common obstacle for the newly retired to overcome is, in a sense, a loss of identity. Whatever you did for work prior to retiring, whether you were a teacher, an office worker, a bank manager, or any other role, you are now in the new category of ‘the newly retired’. There was a level of expertise and responsibility that made you an asset to the place you worked, and now that feeling of inclusion in a bigger organisation has gone. It can be very tempting to continue to define yourself by what you used to do, perhaps…

#1: discover who you want to be now

To begin with, we’re going to settle into a state of mindful thinking. Do this however you feel comfortable, whether that is focusing on your breathing, imagining you’re somewhere in nature etc. Stay in this meditation, reminding yourself to gently push out any thoughts that are intruding. After a few minutes, start to consider yourself, and what feels important to you. What feels most important that you focus on? Your family? Your local community? Is there a cause that you’re already thinking about supporting? If not, don’t worry. Just think about the kind of work that you could potentially do with your new-found free time. Just breathe and think about the various options that come to the top of your mind. Do any of them resonate particularly strongly with you? We’ll…

#2: work out what you want to do now

This should be done after you’ve picked a few different goals to focus on in the first activity, and when you’re more used to being in a mindful state. Spend a little longer in the breathing, focusing state, and remember to push out all intrusive thoughts for a few minutes, before you let your mind begin to roam. Now you are gently going to imagine yourself planning your big project. Where are you? Is it in a workshop, or looking at a map of the world? Are you looking at sports gear? Are you sketching out ideas for a novel? If you haven’t got that far, imagine you’re looking at a blank piece of paper, and just write down words that come to mind when you think of yourself and…
