Hello and welcome to the September issue of Tractor & Machinery. Although we’re still a long way from the ‘normal’ that we left behind earlier this year, the new way of life is slowly opening up to allow us as enthusiasts to do some of the things that we enjoy so much. For the first time in a while, we’ve got some events to report on and although they are nothing like the scale we were used to before Covid-19 struck, it’s still pleasing to see that with careful planning and common sense, it is possible to get enjoyment from the machinery that we all work so hard to preserve. running a runabout

Tim James is a building contractor from Blandford, Dorset, with a penchant for tractors with a local history. These include an unusual International 956XL, often referred to as a ‘Rallye’ edition, and an aptly-named Massey Ferguson 135 ‘Flamingo’ conversion – used for crop spraying on a nearby estate. Both of the aforementioned tractors have featured in T&M, but one of Tim’s other prized machines is an International 374, which filled a gap at the 50th anniversary Great Dorset Steam Fair when the organisers were struggling to find a tractor from 1977. championships cancelled

The Society of Ploughmen has announced the cancellation of this year’s British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival at Mindrum, Northumberland, due to the ongoing uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic. In a statement, the Directors expressed their great disappointment and said it was an extremely difficult decision to make but their first priority is the health and safety of their volunteers, competitors, judges, stewards, exhibitors, visitors and the local community. They have consulted the host farmer, their Committees, trade exhibitors and sponsors and felt it was impossible to hold an event of the same quality and standard that their ploughing competitors and members would expect. principal retires

The man that steered the UK’s first ever engineering academy to success over its first decade, retired on 17 July. Jim Wade became the first Principal of the JCB Academy in 2009, implementing the vision of JCB Chairman Lord Bamford to create a school dedicated to producing the engineers and business leaders of the future. goodyear tyres for big bud

Goodyear Farm Tires’ Low Sidewall technology has proved the answer to the conundrum to find suitable tyres for the biggest tractor in the world. Goodyear’s Low Sidewall (LSW) 1400/30R46s have been fitted to the 1,100hp Big Bud 16V-747. The fitting of eight new rims and tyres took place at the Heartland Museum in Clarion in Iowa, where the giant tractor has been hosted for the last seven years. It is thought to be the first time the tyres have been changed since the tractor was built in 1977. The entire width of the Big Bud, which was paraded down a high street after the tyre change, stands at 25 feet.
