And while many of us have porches, decks, loggias, balconies, and pergolas, some of us are only armchair gardeners, relegated to the fantasy greenscapes in our minds or a windowsill just big enough for a tray of herbs. For the past few weeks, I have been helping a colleague and friend with her “veranda,” a tiny perch above her New York apartment building’s entrance that’s just a block from where I live. I’m not sure if I’m advising as much as offering unsolicited advice on what I think she should plant; after all, I do walk by it every day. She has taken my recommendations in stride. DESTINATION: MIAMI Long known for its showrooms and vintage furniture dealers, the Miami Design District is becoming a hot spot for a different kind of retail therapy.
