Somewhere along the line, it all started to fall apart. No, I’m not talking about a rocky relationship, a home-improvement project, or the best-laid vacation plans gone awry. It was simply my scheme to get a few plants into the ground. There were not-so-subtle warning signs: A late-season frost took out the basil; I never thought it was warm enough for the tomatoes; and everything seemed to vacillate between being overwatered and underwatered. I guess that’s what separates amateurs from green thumbs— although, armed with trowel and spade in hand, I know I can hold my own in any garden. Some seasons just aren’t as forgiving as others.
