Jack Dobson’s article in the February edition struck a chord with me about accessories. Three years ago we looked long and hard at the possibility of buying a roof tent and almost pressed the button, but we paused when we considered the time it takes to get it ready at a campsite, particularly in often inclement Scottish weather. We then spotted an advert by Drivelodge for their pop-up roof. For us it was a no-brainer. Their fibreglass roof is very neat and almost unnoticeable when closed. Arthur joined the Rover Company towards the end of the Second World War and was responsible for the design and launch of the first Land Rover. In 1957, Arthur left Rover to join Lucas Girling, where he played a leading role in developing the company’s disc brake system. In 1970 he moved to Australia, and that was the last Land Rover enthusiasts heard of him until 2009, when he was famously rediscovered by a young Land Rover fan named Alex Massey. Alex shared the news with another Australian Land Rover historian, Michael Bishop, who wrote the now-famous book about Arthur entitled They Found Our Engineer. LAND Rovers took centre stage at the 2020 Royal Automobile Club’s (RAC) Historic Awards. Yes, it might already be 2021, but the awards ceremony, which is usually held at the RAC’s impressive Pall Mall HQ in London, was delayed in an attempt to see if members could attend. Covid decided otherwise and eventually the decision was taken to host an online ceremony. It was definitely worth the wait as Land Rovers dominated the awards from start to finish.
