With over 120 athletes registered to compete, the National Arm-wrestling Championships kicks off in Paarl tomorrow.
The South African Armwrestling Federation (SAAF) hosted event at Klein Parys Vineyards, is expected to be the biggest national championship in 22 years of organised armwrestling in South Africa.
“Globally, the sport is growing at an unprecedented rate, and this is being mirrored in South Africa,” said SAAF President Rosemary Botha, who added that the sport’s popularity in the Western Cape has been particularly pronounced. “From Bonteheuwel to Mossel Bay, the sport, which combines strength, speed and technical proficiency, has never been this accessible,” said Botha.
The number of Western Cape armwrestling clubs has risen from two to eight since 2022, and this includes two new clubs in the Winelands.
