What we did ... Captivated by mehndi—the application of symbolic designs on hands and feet using henna—we embellished garden pots with painted dots, lines, vines, leaves, paisley, and other simple patterns that give a patio distinctive style. Stencils ease the process and enable more exotic effects as well as customized designs. THIS PHOTO: To create this bold pattern, coat a flat-sided container with white exterior paint and let it dry. Lightly spray the back of a stencil (we found this one at cuttingedgestencils.com) with stencil adhesive to hold it on the pot’s surface as you work. How to Stencil a Floor in Two Colors What you’ll need: -Stencil (We used Moroccan Tiles wall stencil from Cutting Edge Stencils.) -Flat-finish latex paint in white -Poster board -Exterior latex paint (Amounts depend on floor space. For best results, choose natural dyed fabrics, such as cotton or linen, or 50/50 blends. Avoid 100 percent synthetic fibers (such as polyester), because they are typically colorfast. Safety First Before you work with bleach, take the proper precautions. Keep bleach out of reach of children, and work in well-ventilated areas. Always wear eye protection.
