Dance, as the title suggests, is a common thread, but this is really about the nature of class, racism, the cult of celebrity and, most significantly, friendship. Sharp and authentic, it makes you consider if we can ever really know another person, however close. Far from bleak, though, this story of the narrator’s complex relationships with childhood friend Tracey and her pop-star employer is hugely enjoyable.

Beautifully captivating, this novel follows two childhood friends as they grow up, with the huge differences in the lives they lead and the people they encounter serving as a painful reminder that, even in the 21st century, there is still a huge stigma surrounding race and social class.
