This current batch of Classic EastEnders episodes from 2000 had to cope with the absence of Mike Reid as Frank Butcher due to illness. The problem? The main story was about desperate Frank running a dodgy car scam behind Peggy and Pat’s back. In such circumstances, scenes are swiftly and unconvincingly rewritten – with the producer whistling and pretending to look out the window as they are broadcast, knowing that no one is really buying what’s going on. In this case, however, crossing out the name ‘Frank’ on the scripts and hastily scribbling in ‘Peggy’ actually makes the plot a lot more fun. So much so that they kept it…
