And we’re especially pumped for a new season from the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). The PWHL is the highest-paying women’s hockey league ever. In earlier leagues, female players barely made any money at all. They needed day jobs to pay their bills so they could keep playing. And working those day jobs made it hard to find time to practise. Sports leagues rely on ticket sales and broadcasting revenue to support the league. Unfortunately, these earlier leagues failed because they couldn’t make enough money. In 2019, star female players formed the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA). They refused to play pro hockey until a stable league with proper funding and support was made so that it could grow a fan base (and sell tickets). Four years later, the PWHL was formed!
