for me, this time of year is about exploring a new trail or discovering a bike path and leaving the AC behind—for a few hours, at least. (Come August, that’s another story.) Looking at the garden steps and staircases above, all outtakes from stories in this issue, piqued my curiosity. The people who call these spaces home know where those steps lead (I hope!), but for casual observers like myself, don’t you wonder about what’s over the crest of the hill? Or what the view’s like looking back? What happens if you turn left or jog right? Countess Nicholas (Tania) Bobrinskoy, 93, has a life story that’s nothing short of cinematic: After growing up between Paris and the village of Versailles in a community of Russian émigrés, she fled to the United States on the eve of World War II. (“My father paid the passage with a bag of jewelry,” she recalls.) When his sister Betty Ann relocated from the family home to a smaller townhouse in Nashville in 2001, she wanted to bring inherited antiques along with her. Luckily, her brother happened to be an icon of American decorating and injected those keepsakes with gorgeous new life. In our 30th-anniversary year, we’re revisiting memorable spaces from our pages and scouring the market for objects that channel their spirit.
