a look back at 2019

FEBRUARY 17 Just over a month after the passing of J.D. Gibbs, co-owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, Denny Hamlin paid the ultimate tribute to the man who helped bring him to JGR by winning an emotional Daytona 500. It was Hamlin's second win in the Great American Race. Kyle Busch launched his championship run with a win at the Ticket Guardian 500 at ISM Raceway in Avondale, Ariz., before celebrating in classic Kyle style. MARCH 10 MARCH 24 Brad Keselowski conquered the famed paperclip to win the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway. MARCH 31 Denny Hamlin and his FedEx Toyota delivered a hard-earned win for Joe Gibbs Racing at the O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Martin Truex Jr. won the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway — breaking his 0-for-81 career drought on short tracks. APRIL…

the pearn problem

Martin Truex Jr. will need to maintain his championship-caliber success in 2020 without longtime crew chief Cole Pearn. Pearn, who left the team to spend more time with his family, is not the first head wrench to leave a driver in his prime. Here’s a look at some of the more infamous driver-crew chief divorces. Can Truex buck the trend? JEFFGORDON – RAY EVERNHAM (1999) Evernham, after three titles in four years with Jeff Gordon, left the team in order to form a new two-car organization in tandem with Dodge’s return to NASCAR in 2001. Gordon responded by winning two of the first seven races with replacement Brian Whitesell, propelling him to a sixth-place finish in the 1999 standings. But Hendrick Motorsports didn’t feel the fit was exactly right, poaching longtime Richard…

winless wonders

NASCAR’s Championship 4 playoff format, first introduced in 2014, was supposed to guarantee Game 7 moments with an emphasis placed on winning. A victory in the regular season all but guarantees a playoff spot; one in the postseason guarantees advancement into the next round. The season ends with four drivers competing in a winner-take-all finale, making a trip to Victory Lane feel like a prerequisite. Or so we thought. Matt Crafton completed the unthinkable in 2019, becoming the first winless NASCAR champion in Gander Outdoors Truck Series history. Crafton led just 44 laps on the year, never finished higher than second and earned only one top-5 finish in the seven-race postseason. It led to questions about the legitimacy of Crafton’s title considering the four-win campaigns of Brett Moffitt and Austin Hill.…

inside the numbers

171 Total laps led by Jimmie Johnson the past two years. Johnson led an average of 1,166 laps per season from 2002-17. 26 Victories by Kevin Harvick in six seasons driving for Stewart-Haas Racing. He had 23 in 13 seasons driving for Richard Childress Racing after replacing Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt. 1 Driver under the age of 30 who has made the Championship 4 in the six-year history of NASCAR’s current playoff format: Joey Logano. 2 Cup races that ran caution free in 2019 except for stage breaks: Las Vegas in March and Sonoma in June. Before stage racing, NASCAR hadn’t seen a race without a natural caution flag since October 2002 at Talladega. 0.000 Pole-winning speed at Auto Club Speedway after no one in the final round attempted to qualify within NASCAR’s posted time limit. The sport…

5 nascar tracks of the future

The sport is abuzz with an impending 2021 schedule shakeup after current agreements with racetracks expire following the 2020 Cup Series season. NASCAR president Steve Phelps clarified his realignment priorities during his season-ending State of the Sport press conference at Homestead-Miami Speedway. “We’re looking at three things when we’re looking at that race schedule,” Phelps said. “We’re looking at where we’re going to have the most competitive racing that we can have, where we’re going to have full grandstands, and what does that market look like; is it a new market that we can service?” What racetracks out there fit those criteria? Here are a few you could see pop up when the calendar hits 2021. 1. IOWA SPEEDWAY This 7/8-mile oval is nicknamed “The Fastest Short Track on The Planet” but acts…
