pretty stout

Seems like I get a note from a frustrated reader at least once a week asking, “why do you guys only run Chevy and Ford content?!” It’s a legit question with a legit answer that’s been discussed at nauseam. The simple answer is, we run what’s been done. Our cadre of photographers travel across the country, searching for truck features throughout the year, and shoot the best ones. Since the production numbers for Ford and Chevy trucks dwarf all other makes, that’s typically what we find. Tech stories are the same. A suspension story on a ’69 C10 is going to resonate with thousands of readers versus the same story on a Dodge. Personally, I’d like to branch out and embrace some of the other, less popular makes, but the…

split personality

Most any rodder, whether they’re into Model T Fords, mid-’50s Chevys, ’60s-era Dodges, or even early C10 pickups, can trace their love of that particular vehicle back to a moment in time when that memory was burned into their brain. For some, recreating that memory by recreating the vehicle involved is a way to relive the whole experience. Maybe you couldn’t afford that car you wanted in high school, but now you can, and a similar quest is being fulfilled by thousands of hot rodders across the country every day. For Gardena, California’s Gus Orendain, the story goes a little deeper than that. Growing up in Southern California’s car culture, having a love of cars is like breathing—it’s just a natural thing to do. Hot rods, customs, and lowriders were all…

she’s got the look

Forget about perfect body lines and door gaps—although they are rather important aspects to many an owner/builder—the “look” is more of a celestial aligning of the mechanical stars in a way … and in some cases, it takes a whole lot more than just the right wheel/tire selection and appropriate amount of altitude adjustment to achieve. Fans of the one-year-only classic truck icon, the venerable ’56 Ford F-100, know that despite the Motor Company’s hugely successful design achievement, they kind of came up short when placing the front axle centerline—at least when it comes to lowering and/or retrofitting an IFS, that is. A seemingly miniscule amount, barely over an inch in most cases, can visually make or break the overall look with the wheel sitting toward the rearmost side of the…

upgrading your barn find

When the planets align and you’re lucky enough to get a lead on a potential barn find truck, it’s like a rush of pure adrenalin. The level of excitement from unearthing something that has sat dormant for years brings a new level of archeology to the truck world. Your discovery might be a rock-solid, low-mile gem, a rusted old hulk banished from a farm, or something in between. In any of the above cases it takes an investment of time and finance to bring it back to life on the street. Fortunately for us, our barn find ’46 Chevy, although having seen better days, was extremely solid. This made it a perfect candidate to bring back to life in our budget-conscious build. Over the past few installments we’ve updated the frame,…
