THE BEAUTY BRAIN JENNIFER GEORGE Jennifer’s early career goal was to be a ‘businesswoman’. Now, as ELLE Beauty Editor, she makes it her business to find the best products and is still searching for a 1O/1O mascara. Her childhood was ‘on the move’ – her dad was in the Royal Navy – and she’s always looking for her next trip, with Argentina first on the list. This summer, she’ll balance festivals (Glastonbury, Boardmasters and Creamfields) with sleeping in, ‘I’m a champion at lie-ins. I’ve even taught my dachshund, Geoffrey, to do it.’ Jennifer interviews Zendaya on p66 THE IMAGE-MAKER MARCIN KEMPSKI Marcin studied law before swapping the courtroom for a photography studio. He now co-owns creative agency I Like Photo, and shoots regularly for Wonderland and Numéro. Born in Poland, now based in London, he’s planning…

breaking up with thin

PHOTOGRAPH by CHRIS HEADS M y bathroom, 2O19. I have just run a bath, but the pain of my backbones on the enamel means that I abandon the water almost immediately. I glance at my phone. A friend has just texted me in desperation. ‘PLEASE eat something.’ Apathetically, I decide to get on the scales. The old me would only ever have done this in the morning, having not eaten anything for 12 hours and having been to the bathroom first. I look at the dial. I weigh 8st 2lb. This is 26 pounds below my usual weight of 1Ost. It’s model weight. Movie-star weight. The weight that means sample sizes fit and your appearance gets the nod of approval from the fashion firmament. But instead of feeling euphoric, it feels frightening. Like…

welcome to the club

Almost nine weeks ago to the day, I sat down and started editing this magazine for the very first time. I can’t remember that much about my first day – not the weather, not how many new faces I met, not even how I was feeling (nervous, one suspects – age rarely dims that), but I can definitely remember what I wore. Black. Black jumper. Black jacket. Black trousers. Boots the colour of a panther’s claw. “AS WOMEN, we WANT TO FIT IN, BUT WE ALSO WANT to STAND OUT” ‘Why wear all black?’ my husband asked, as I stood in front of the bedroom mirror. ‘Because black is the collective uniform of the fashion world,’ I replied. And a uniform is exactly what you need when you want to fit in. Fashion is…

to do this month

1 INDULGE Ever thought about sending pineapples with your flowers? Nope, us neither. Until flower gurus Bloom & Wild told us they’ll be everywhere this summer. They’ve added mini pink pineapple stems to their Lana bouquet for an instant Club Tropicana feel. 2 LISTEN Seven years after Justin Bieber discovered a 13-year-old Madison Beer, the New Yorker has broken away from cookie-cutter pop (collabs with Offset and Jax Jones sorted that). She’s co-written every track on her new album – her most honest yet. Look out for a UK tour later this year. 3 DRINK The teetotal revolution is gaining pace, and it just got tastier with AEcorn Aperitifs. From the sister brand of Seedlip, these flavours – Dry, Aromatic and Bitter – are best served with sun… and a splash of soda. 4 SEE Shortlisted…

ATTENTION dressing IT WON’T BE HARD IN the BIG, BOLD, FLAMBOYANT SHAPES on SHOW at ALEXANDER McQUEEN, MARY KATRANTZOU, GUCCI… THE LIST goes ON. TOUCH it Fuzzy textures are in. This season, your accessories will be begging to be stroked, from hats and stoles at Tom Ford to bags at Chloé and slippers at Kenzo. Word to the wise: wear sparingly. Horror STORY The most surprising style icon of the season? Wednesday Addams. Kitsch horror is fashion’s unlikeliest trend, with vampy scream queens walking the runways at Marni, Kenzo, Prada and Miu Miu. What this means for your wardrobe: black, black and more black, lace and stripes. The new goth, if you will. Frighteningly cool. GOOD to GLOW NEON: the COOL WAY to DO COCKTAIL HOUR – SAINT LAURENT by ANTHONY VACCARELLO is PROOF. HELL for LEATHER Trousers, blazers,…

the collaboration louis vuitton & the art of style

Louis Vuitton has given new meaning to ‘art nouveau’ with its recently launched limited-edition handbags. The luxury house has given six contemporary artists carte blanche to reimagine its Capucines bag, named after the street in Paris on which Louis Vuitton opened his first store. There’s something in the Artycapucines Collection to suit every taste, with styles by Urs Fischer, Jonas Wood, Nicholas Hlobo, Alex Israel, Sam Falls and Tschabalala Self, who join the long list of artists who have worked with Vuitton in the past. (Previous collaborations include Stephen Sprouse, Yayoi Kusama and Jeff Koons.) Only 3OO of each Artycapucines Collection bag exists globally, though. So move fast if you want one – or risk finding yourself ‘artbroken.…
