go easy

Confession: Last January, determined to eat more veg and less carbs, I bought myself a spiralizer. Then it sat on my kitchen table, unopened, for seven months. The spiralizer isn’t difficult to use—it had nothing to do with that. (And yes, you can buy veggie noodles at the supermarket, but I’m kinda known for making things challenging for myself.) It sat collecting dust because even the teeniest tiniest change, like to your dinner routine or your mind-set, is really, really hard. And change is all everyone talks about in January. So here’s my get-real resolution for the New Year: Be kind to yourself. Women (especially moms) feel so much pressure and guilt for what they’re not getting done or not doing well enough. Let it go—you’re one person, doing the best you…

Dad: John Daughter: Jennifer Mom: Dawn Son: Jake “When you have a baby, it’s amazing how you’re instantly and insanely in love with something that never existed before. That feeling just grows as my kids get older.”—DAWN“My parents are always cheering me on. They set high standards and make sure I give my best effort in anything I do.”—JENNIFER Jake: I’d always make Jenny play sports with me in the backyard. I could beat her in basketball. Dawn: He has the height, but Jenny has the skill. John: The kids were always on travel teams. Keeps them out of trouble. Dawn: We learned very quickly not to talk to either of them for at least half an hour if they lost. A little ice cream, a little dinner, and then they’d bounce back. Son: Jake “My sister and I still…

best face forward

Complexion concern: Fine lines and wrinkles At Home A key ingredient for treating wrinkles is retinol or a prescription retinoid (like Refissa), says Ranella Hirsch, MD, a dermatologist in Boston. The vitamin A derivative speeds up cell turnover, leading to newer, plumper skin cells. Hirsch advises patience: Retinols and retinoids are super potent and they sometimes make skin look worse (irritated and red) before it starts to look better. Don’t quit at first peel—begin slowly, with a pea-sized amount twice a week, then increase the frequency as your skin adjusts. Give it 12 weeks in order to see a difference. If you just can’t deal with the irritation from using a retinoid, you could try a higher-tech (but pricier) approach: a professional-strength LED light source, which uses light energy to treat…

ponytail dent

STEP 1: PREP Wash hair at night and let it dry while you sleep to add texture for the next day’s style. In the morning, before styling, spray a small amount of dry shampoo on the roots, followed by a drop of heat-protectant cream on mid-shaft to ends just before you start curling. OUR EXPERT: Paul Cucinello, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Cucinello Studio, New York STEP 2: CURL Divide hair into large sections and curl each from mid-shaft to ends with a 1 ½-inch curling iron, like Hot Tools Radiant Blue Curling Iron (ulta.com, $70). While curling may seem like an extra step, wavy hair hides a dent much better than straight hair when you take out your pony later. If you want more volume in your ponytail, backcomb at the roots of…

CREATE A CALENDAR A central calendar is a must, whether you prefer physical or digital. “Whatever is best for mom is best for the whole family,” says Marissa Hagmeyer, co-owner of the national luxury organizing company Neat Method. If you prefer physical: Put your calendar in a central spot, like the fridge. “To be truly functional, it has to be where people are,” says Amy Tokos, a certified professional organizer and productivity consultant for Freshly Organized in Omaha, NE. Use color coding to distinguish between kid-only and whole-family activities, and have everyone add their own events. When anyone has a scheduling question, direct them to check the calendar. If you prefer digital: Create a shared cloud-based calendar. Use the app on your phone, or try Cozi Family Organizer (Android and iOS, free), which…
