JEROME AWATSHI Our longstanding fashion stylist brings an animalistic taste to adventure and travel in this latest spread on tented vacations. It’s got style, it’s got verve, and it’s got us wanting to pay a visit to Egypt or Morocco for a punt. LEOW JU-LEN If it has an engine and wheels, you’ll find Leow Ju-Len all over it like a monkey on a banana. He’s covered the car industry since 1995 without being sick of it (it’s not known if the feeling is mutual). Ju-Len believes in rear-wheel drive, V8s and world peace. In that order. DAVID J WHYTE I've been with Golf Vacations for at least 10 years, possibly more. It’s been a great experience. I only met Benny once in Mauritius but I feel I can count him as a friend. The team always did a great job presenting my work and it was exciting to see the features laid out and ready to go. Working with the magazine also allowed me to experience some amazing places - mainly in the UK, Europe and North America but no complaints about that. One of these days though, I'll be knocking on Benny’s door when I finally get a chance to come east to Asia. SPENCER ROBINSON For golfing globe-trotters and adventure-seekers, Golf Vacations has been an indomitable companion. Like an enduring and trusted friend, it’s always been there…

quarter centennial

The years roll by so quickly and it’s already been 25 issues of Golf Vacations Malaysia. It marks the final issue of 2019 and we’d like to turn over the decade in style. And what a 10 years it has been for golf. We’ve witnessed the rise of Tiger Woods, his fall from grace, and the exhilarating and unbelievable manner of his (yet another) comeback at this year’s Masters. We’ve also seen Mission Hills Golf Club, already the world’s biggest golf club, opening another 10 golf courses in the resort island of Hainan in southern China back in 2010. Fast forward to today and the megaplex contains not just those courses, but also all manner of quality sporting and entertainment facilities, two luxury hotels and retail and dining experiences. Sadly, this decade has…

a trip down memory lane

I’ll be honest. When I was first tasked with this story, I spent many sleepless nights thinking about how best to go about this. Covering over 30 years of Golf Vacations is no mean feat and to do justice to the legacy of Golf Vacations. Only being part of the team for a comparatively short period of time, I turned to the past copies and yes, that meant all 98 volumes. Now, it would be impossible to squeeze all of that in just a few pages but nonetheless, I present to you the highlights from over 30 years of Golf Vacations. THE FIRST DECADE (1987 - 1997) “Percy, I’ve got something close to your heart,” says Guy Goh, the then publisher of Pacom Publications in a late-night phone call to Percy Seneviratne, who was…

rolex oyster perpetual sea-dweller

Since its original introduction in 1967, the Sea-Dweller has been a companion to the pioneers of professional deep-sea diving, who spend extended periods of time underwater. This ultra-resistant tool watch accompanied the first experimental underwater habitat programmes, and played a vital role in conquering the ocean depths. The watch proudly features the Rolex Oyster case, crafted from a solid block of particularly corrosion-resistant Oystersteel. The case back is hermetically screwed down, utilising the same design philosophy as submarine hatches. This gives the watch tremendous water-resistance, and is guaranteed waterproof down to 1,220 meters, or 4,000 feet. A defining feature of the Sea-Dweller is a little valve on the 9 o’clock side of the middle case, the Rolex patented helium escape valve. The helium escape valve is very important in the deep. It acts…

the cornerstone of life

Presented by It was back in 1999 when I first met Clinton Ang at his bustling restaurant and wine bar along Robertson Quay. No one could find anything on it from the internet today but back then, the 26-year-old had helped reimagine a more than 60 years old wine and spirits distribution business in the midst of an industry shakedown where principal labels have begun entering into our fast emerging market. His gregarious smile and warm welcome make this a very pleasant weekly endeavour. That outlet may have gone but the same boyish grin remains broadly available to all who come into contact with the now veteran Managing Director of Hock Tong Bee Pte Ltd. Age, it seems, agrees with Clinton, who has since married Tina, his beautiful wife and has a young…
