playing favourites

Quick, what’s your favourite room? No “hmmms…” or second-guessing. When you think about your home, what’s the one space that stands out from all the rest? Maybe it’s the kitchen, where the island is a magnet for family and friends. Maybe it’s a spa-like bathroom that starts your day on a serene note. Or, it could be the living room simply because a new rug or reupholstered sofa makes you smile. After six years and four renos at my house, it’s tough to play favourites. (Probably the kitchen, though the dining room is gaining momentum.) But when it comes to naming my least favourite space, I don’t have to pause: it’s my bedroom. Empty white walls and beige bedding announces that I didn’t even make an effort — it’s the design…

your letters

Brian Gluckstein has designed another beautiful home (“Open Invitation,” December), but I think he’d do well to think about how families live and change. Next year, I’d love to see a house with a nanny/in-law suite, designed with accessibility in mind. I know Brian could do this subtly and elegantly! — J. DUNBAR I was struck by the French polished walls in one of your features (“Designer of the Year,” December). In my Scottish shipbuilding hometown, some ladies had the trade of French polishing the onboard woodwork by this beautiful process. Thanks for the lovely photographs and memories. — J.M. JARDIN As an off-and-on subscriber over the last few years, I thought I saw a move toward colour in House & Home, so I re-subscribed. But the December issue was a disappointment. I don’t…

what’s cooking

Despite her busy schedule, design celebrity Sarah Richardson still finds time to cook and entertain. “I learned from my mom, and now my nine-yearold loves to cook, too,” she says. “My entertaining style is relaxed, but I like a kitchen with all the perks, including lots of counter space and proinspired appliances.” Her own homes have appliances by Monogram Canada, inspiring Sarah to partner with the brand to create three cool kitchens: one revealed last fall at Monogram’s Design Centre and two debuting at January’s Toronto Interior Design Show. One IDS kitchen will reimagine a classic pizzeria for the home chef (with Monogram’s built-in pizza oven turning out tasty samples) and the other will show how to bring sophisticated style into the most hardworking room in the house. “We’re moving…

pro tips

Martyn Lawrence Bullard, 2017 On decorating for every sense “Fragranced candles are an inexpensive way to bring your personality into a room. I have candles going 24-7!” Lee Broom, 2016 On dining room lighting “You’re much better off getting a light fixture that’s a little too big to go over the dining table, rather than too small. Scale is really important.” Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller, Carrier and Company, 2016 On art “Consider reframing your art. It can completely change the look or make it work better in a space.” Alexa Hampton, 2015 On irregular ceilings “Create a straight edge by running a picture rail just below the ceiling line.” Thom Filicia, 2015 On flooring “I’m not a big fan of taking my shoes off. It makes me think that maybe you didn’t choose the right floor.” Text by Kimberley Brown (Expert Advice)/compiled by Kimberley…
