best of the best

One of my favourite rooms by our Designer of the Year, Nam Dang-Mitchell. It’s Paris by way of Calgary, thanks to French doors with a juliet balcony, pale chevron floors and stacks of magazines at the foot of the bed. J’adore!Meet our new Food editor, the talented Eshun MottA few days into Eshun Mott’s first week in the office, I noticed — swooned over, actually — our new Food editor’s picture-perfect lunch. It was “only” a salad, but there was something irresistible about the way she composed the ingredients. I shouldn’t have been surprised. After culinary school, Eshun did a stint in restaurant kitchens before working with food columnist and cookbook author Lucy Waverman for 12 years. After that, she set out on her own as a recipe developer and…

JAMES MCDONALD Photographer, “English Translation” (page 48)Based in London, U.K., James’ work has been featured in House & Garden and World of Interiors. One designer whose style you can’t get enough of? I look to Copenhagen brand No Nationality — now called NN07 — for its boiled wool jackets. Best thing about the holidays? Being with my family and helping my mother make our traditional Christmas Day lunch.GRACE TOBY Writer, “Coastal Celebration” (page 54)A Toronto writer with a passion for style and travel, Grace has written for enRoute, Canadian Living and more. How do you entertain for the holidays? Every few years, my husband and I throw a Chrismukkah party where we serve food from both of our backgrounds. Best thing about the holidays? We make cartellate, a sweet from…

OUR READERS HAVE THEIR SAY.I’m officially in love with J Gibson’s gorgeously traditional home (“Love Story,” October). It’s sentimental, on trend, eclectic and humorous all wrapped up in one. My favourite piece is the photograph over the bed; the juxtaposition with the rest of the home shows that J is fun and not stuck on keeping up with the Joneses. — BRENDA RUSSELL, Newmarket, Ont.I have to admit that I noticed a significant increase in ads in the October issue. I know that times are tough for magazines but, as a reader, I sure had to wade deep into the magazine to get to the design. — JODI, Chestermere, Alta.Publisher’s reply: Bless you for noticing that we are alive and well! Thanks to all of our loyal advertisers for ensuring our…

ULTIMATE INFOTAINMENTHands-free phone and navigation, a premium Bose® sound system and smartphone connection via Apple CarPlayTM and Android AutoTM let you make the most of time on the road. SiriusXM Traffic Plus and Travel Link services also keep you informed of major road incidents, weather, local fuel prices and more.*“I spend more time in my car than I do sleeping, so a hands-free phone and a really great sound system are musts. I’m blasting everything from Eminem to Foo Fighters.” — GRACE CASTANEDA“I like to drive to ateliers to see one-of-a-kind pieces in person, like the Janaki Larsen ceramics we used in this home.“A group of designers and I did a modern home tour in Texas. The homes were fantastic but a lot of the fun and connection happened as…

There are so many enticing finishes in this collection. How do they all work together? The burnished metals, reflective amber and copper mirroring are all of the same ilk. It’s less about contrasts and more about unison — all of it being subtle and connected. The mirrors look like jewelry for walls. Where do you imagine them? These mirrors can really elevate a small, often unthought-of space. One of these at the end of a hallway changes the experience. I think of them as odd little reflective windows. What inspired the basketweave design of the suede Elis bench? It felt vintage to me, like a great suede jacket or handbag from the 1970s. The mixture of the texture with the rose gold is a nice juxtaposition that brings it into the present day.The Apparatus sconce…
