a christmas story

You never know who you’ll meet on social media. I was sipping coffee on a Saturday morning last December when I got the Instagram notification: “@andraya1123farmhouse started following you.” Intrigued by the “farmhouse” part, I popped over to her page. Idyllic photos of rolling hills, weathered barnboard, fieldstone walls and rustic fireplace mantels filled my screen. There was something magical about this place. I wanted to know more. The reply came instantly. Andraya, a lawyer, bought the 25-acre property with her husband, Graham, as a weekend escape from their life in Toronto — a place they could unwind with their two girls and extended family. “The house is definitely pre-Confederation!” she wrote. “It’s a very special place.” A week and a handful of emails later, interiors director Meg Crossley and I jumped…

It seems like a welcome return to your roots! — JULIA BRENNAN The lack of colour throughout your magazine has bored me past the point of no return. Featuring a blue pitcher in an otherwise monochromatic space is simply insufficient to spark my interest. — SARAH TREGONNING I’ve been reading House & Home for years, and I especially like it when you include floor plans with the articles. — DOROTHY LECKY I’m concerned that your magazine is promoting “hardscaping” at a time when we are facing unprecedented overland flooding (“Fine Lines,” September). Yes, “more hard surfaces mean less maintenance,” but they also mean that there’s less ground area for rainwater to…
