It’s a fact of life in magazine publishing that we’re always thinking ahead, working on several months’ worth of issues simultaneously. Much planning and development goes on behind the scenes, which is why it’s always exciting when we finally get to work on the ‘live’ issue. And none is more exciting than the Christmas edition, which we are delighted to present to you here. There’s a seasonal feel to the pages this month, kicking off with our Gift Guide, which is full to the brim with Italian treats and gifts for friends and family. We travel to Piedmont, where Turin takes Christmas lights to another level with sophisticated displays that will take your breath away; and on to Milan, where the city’s best cafés are wrapped up in Christmas cheer. five reasons to visit italy at christmas

1 Where better to be at Christmas than in a festive high-altitude town known for its fantastic traditional outdoor market and with the stunning Dolomites as a picturesque seasonal backdrop? Bolzano, in Italy’s Trentino- Alto Adige region, really comes into its own at this time of year with Italy’s most famous Christmas market, which sees the piazze and streets filled with arts and crafts, sweets and chocolate, and plenty of vin brulé to fuel the merriment. This year the market runs from November the 22nd to January the 6th. 2 As the home of the presepe tradition, Naples sure knows how to celebrate come Christmas time with the city’s elaborate cribs depicting scenes from the Biblical Christmas story. 3 Many people head for Cortina to spend Natale, but it is among the…

Above and Beyond We’ve got some out of this world news to kick things off this month… Top Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano has announced that he will be returning to space next year as part of a new mission called ‘Beyond’. He shared the news at an event at the European Space Agency’s ESRIN facility at Frascati near Rome. We asked our Facebook followers where in Italy they would most like to spend Christmas. Snuggle down with a festive tipple and find out what they said… • Venice is magical any time of year! Another visit to the Gabrielli Sandwirth on the Grand Canal at Christmas – perfection! Scott Matheson-Barr • We spent Christmas with our friends and owners of the Agriturismo Bramasole e Ginestra in Montopoli in Val d’Arno in 2015. The biggest highlights were cosying up beside our nightly log fire, cooking an English Christmas meal for our hosts and taking part in the long Italian Christmas lunch with our friends. We’d go back every year if we could! Carl Hunt • Rome. With a bottle of prosecco and an ice cream in front of the Trevi Fountain with my husband. Jen Coulson •…
