In my experience, the term ‘fussy cutting’ usually elicits one reaction or another from a quilter. Some enjoy the technique and think of beautifully intricate quilts pieced from precision-cut sections of fabric. Others detest the thought of meticulously cutting cute, tiny motifs and struggle with the idea of fabric being as holey as Swiss cheese. Others aren’t even sure what fussy cutting actually is. So let’s clear that part up, shall we? Fussy cutting can, indeed, be the act of meticulously cutting cute, tiny motifs and turning perfectly good fabric into some semblance of Swiss cheese. Here in the UK, the American Museum in Britain has a collection of 250 quilts ranging in date from the eighteenth to mid–twentieth centuries. Queen Kapi’olan’s Fan Quilt and the Hawaiian Quilt pictured here are vibrant examples of the dramatic red and white colour combination found in so many heritage quilts. Linda Boynton Arthur sheds light on how this colourway evolved when she wrote about the early arrival of Turkey Red fabric on the islands which was literally pounded on to bark cloth to create red appliqué shapes. She writes about ‘pau’i’ula’ meaning ‘to beat in red’.
