another legend gone

The motorcycle industry lost a valuable member back on Feb. 3, 2021: Dale Walksler, owner of Wheels Through Time Museum, passed away after a long battle with cancer. Dale began in the motorcycle industry by selling motorcycles at the age of 18 and then becoming one of the youngest dealers in Harley-Davidson history as the owner of a franchise in Mt. Vernon, Ill., at the age of 25. Apparently, he even accepted a bear cub as a deposit on a motorcycle once. The bear had full run of the shop until it outgrew the space and was relocated to a local animal shelter. Dale sold his dealership in 2000. Dale founded Wheels Through Time Museum and it’s this museum he was most famous for. As well, his dedication to educate the masses…

the kawasaki klr650 is back

The Kawasaki KLR650 was reintroduced in January as a 2022 model, and it hasn’t changed all that much. That’s good. If you’re old enough to remember the events that unfolded in 1987, you’ll recall that the year wasn’t a particularly outstanding one. Among a few other notable milestones, Chrysler bought American Motors and made it disappear; 93,000 wrestling fans attended WrestleMania III, making it the largest indoor event up to that time; and the stock market crashed for the first time since the Great Wall Street Crash of 1929. However, an even greater thing happened that year: Kawasaki introduced the KLR650. The KLR650 wasn’t a complex machine, even by 1987 standards. It had a mild steel single-downtube frame, basic long-travel suspension, disc brakes and was powered by a 651 cc liquid-cooled, four-valve…

by the numbers

2 The number of consecutive years that the Scottish Six Day Trial (SSDT) has been cancelled due to the pandemic. This is the second time during the event’s history that the SSDT has been disrupted because of disease – the previous disruption, in 2001, was due to the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the U.K. In addition to that disruption, the event was cancelled in 1914-18 and 1939-45 due to the First and Second World Wars. 60 The time in milliseconds that the Klim Ai-1 airbag vest takes to detect and inflate during a crash. After a wait of almost a year for the vests to become available in Canada, Klim confirms we can expect them to be available in May. 2000 The year that the world’s major motorcycle companies reached an agreement to limit the…

say what?

AIR TRAVEL SOON … HOPEFULLY I wanted to pass onto you how much I miss Motorcycle Mojo. I can’t believe I let my subscription expire, but the pandemic had me focusing elsewhere. The articles in your magazine are great and diverse. I love the riding articles and the technical articles. Writers documenting their travels, especially the focus on road trips in Canada, is the best part. I am very grateful for your magazine opening up ideas for my future road trips. One article that has been very helpful is the one about shipping your bike by air (“Maritime Reunion,” November 2020). I am now planning the exact same thing! Because of that article, I am inspired to ship my ST1300 to different locations in Canada and travel. I can’t wait. Thanks so much for your…

ted’s range road diner

I discovered Ted’s Range Road Diner while taking my new-to-me 1977 BMW out for a “test” ride in 1997, which turned out to be a 600-km ride. Twenty-three years later, it’s still my No. 1 bike. The old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” applies to this excellent restaurant. The menu includes emu, alligator, bison, venison and freshly caught trout from Georgian Bay, and so much more. Ted’s is located in a Quonset hut at 138490 Grey Rd. 112, between Meaford and Owen Sound, Ont., north of Hwy. 26. WHERE'S THE FOOD? Your Picks Got a favourite restaurant or pub? adding lean and throttle

Ask any good riding coach what the most common riding error they see at the track is, and they will say adding lean angle and throttle at the same time. What does this mean? This means that while you are still actively leaning or steering the bike over in a corner, you are simultaneously rolling on the gas. And this is a bad habit for a few reasons. First, let’s go over what good throttle control is and what it does for the bike. Throttle control is responsible for keeping your motorcycle stable by transferring weight from the smaller front tire onto the rear tire, which sets the suspension in the correct range and makes the bike more stable. A stable bike not only feels and handles better, but it also…
