making of a milestone

No matter the industry, any business that is still thriving after 20 years should celebrate it as quite an accomplishment, and we plan to do just that as this magazine marks two decades in Naples. What a milestone! There are so many people to thank for the years of continued support that I am not even sure where to start. Of course, we would not be able to produce such a beautiful publication, if it weren’t for the advertisers— several of which have been with us since our first issue in January 1998. The magazine’s first-edition advertisers include Marissa Collections, Bigham Jewelers, Waterside Shops, Gattle’s of Naples, John R. cheers to 20 years!

Twenty years ago this month, the first issue of Naples Illustrated was published with much fanfare. And it is with that same fanfare that we publish this special issue to mark the milestone and look to the future as we begin a new year. We always strive to find fresh ways to cover our unique community and the inspiring people who call this town home. Through the decades, the magazine’s design has evolved, as has the depth and breadth of our stories, which is all part of our commitment to you. In this special issue, we continue our tradition of featuring “Leading Ladies” in our community, but with an anniversary twist; we’re broadening the spotlight to shine on 20 local women who are affecting change in Naples right now. Beginning on page…

q&a sally bedell smith

THE ROYAL TREATMENT Few authors have ventured as deeply into the lives of the British royal family as Sally Bedell Smith. Drawn to writing comprehensive profiles as a former reporter for The New York Times, the bestselling author and historian wrote her first biography on CBS founder Bill Paley, before moving on to other notable figures including Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II. She also worked as a consultant to British film writer Peter Morgan on his play, The Audience, which led to his hit Netflix series, The Crown. Smith will discuss her latest book, Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, at the Archangel Fund’s Art of Giving luncheon on January 31 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. NI: What drew you to writing about British royalty? Bedell Smith:…

Express yourself. Learn to add an artistic touch to any special card or note by taking a calligraphy class at Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs (artcenterbonita.org). You’ll learn how to use a broad-edged pen nib to deliver handwritten messages that are as beautiful as they are heartfelt. Classes are offered throughout the season.
