I don’t like things on my head. Ever. I was always the hoodless kid on a cold playground, and now I’m the only helmet-free (and frowned upon because of it) adult in my bicycling group. So when I was advised that I’d need to make a millinery exception for an event called Hats in the Garden—less than a month after I’d started at Naples Illustrated—I pondered my career path with great angst. And then I bought a glorified headband that some would call a fascinator. I called it a compromise. It was at my first Hats last fall that I began to discover the contrasts of Naples that have captivated me ever since. Its residents are some of the most accomplished people in the world yet also some of the most…

sylvester’s nci designation is elevating cancer care in south florida

Florida’s footprint on the national health care map was expanded this past summer thanks to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center’s recent designation by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). With this achievement, Sylvester, part of UHealth – University of Miami Health System, joins an elite group of world-renowned cancer centers around the U.S. Sylvester became only the second cancer center in the state of Florida, and the 71st in the country, to receive NCI designation. “NCI designation is the ‘gold standard’ for cancer centers,” said Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., director of Sylvester. “It not only recognizes the excellent work Sylvester has been doing, but it also allows our physicians and researchers to expand their research and to collaborate with colleagues at other top-tier cancer centers around the country – which benefits patients…

The local arts community is reframing itself thanks to the launch of the Collier County Arts and Culture Strategic Plan, which includes three public forums to encourage input on how to promote the area as an arts destination. The first meeting, which occurred in September, generated ideas ranging from a Collier County arts magnet school to a Naples festival in December to lure patrons west from Art Basel in Miami. “The ideas have been wonderful and very realistic,” says Kristen Donovan, community engagement coordinator at the United Arts Council of Collier County, which has partnered with the Cultural Planning Group, a consulting firm that’s collecting information through forums, a survey, and more. Discussion groups and interviews will be conducted through January, and a draft plan will be presented to the community…

Think of it, owner Jim Buonavolonta says, as a country club for cars. “If you look at the way garages are permitted, they’re typically permitted as storage,” says the cardiologist and auto enthusiast who’s opening Ultimate Garages in Naples this month. “The purpose of these facilities is to store boats, RVs, and cars. But what we’ve created is the ability to form a lifestyle in that you can build out these garage suites—these car condos, if you will—with kitchens, full bathrooms, and living spaces. They’re not residential so you can’t sleep over, but what you can do is create a personalized space to enjoy with your family and friends.” In addition to climate-controlled custom storage, Ultimate Garages offers a concierge program (for catering services, private jet arrangements, and setting up off-site vehicle…
