the joy of tradition

My family wasn’t huge into the holidays, perhaps because we moved almost every year until I was in high school or because my mother considered gratuitous decoration unseemly. In my Army-brat mind, in fact, Santa didn’t slide down the chimney. He rappelled off the roof with a rucksack full of practical, task-oriented gifts such as Ticonderoga pencils. The “Ding” Darling Day Amateur Nature Photography Contest was for the birds recently, at least when it came to first and second place. Kent Jager’s white-eyed portrait of a vireo, which he shot at the wildlife refuge, took top honors among 191 entries. Says judge and professional photographer David Meardon of the Sanibel Island resident’s entry: “This lighting is even, the bird is sharp and separated well from the soft, green background, and the bird is expressive.” Martha Huard of Bokeelia took second place with her photo of a yellow-crowned night heron, and Larry Brophy of Fort Myers came in third with an American alligator image appropriately titled Keep Your Distance. “We usually see a lot of birds in the contest, but the alligator is also an iconic refuge animal,” says…

St. Matthew’s House, which has been breaking bread for the hungry and homeless in Collier County for more than 30 years, has bro - ken ground on a state-of-the-art restaurant and catering facility. After serving three meals a day in the same building since 1994, the Naples nonprofit has embarked on LuLu’s Kitchen, a $3 million–plus complex that will include an 8,000-square-foot commercial kitchen, culinary training institute, café, and restaurant, which will be open to the public for breakfast and lunch. “St. Matthew’s House is one of the biggest food providers in our area,” says Vann Ellison, president and CEO of the agency that serves more than 500,000 meals a year to St. Matthew’s residents and others in the community. The organization also operates five thrift stores, a car wash and…
