love and legacy

Passion definitely has its place in February, a month relished by romantics, Whitman’s Sampler fans, and people who think groundhogs make prudent meteorologists. But here on the Paradise Coast, love is expressed throughout the year—and through generations—by commitments to philanthropy, family, business, and fun. Our 2020 Naples Illustrated Leading Ladies, whose efforts elevate charities, commerce, and kindness in Collier County, are stellar examples of putting one’s passion to work. From nonprofit know-how to boosting Naples’ global brand, these five women not only ignite change but also perpetuate it. Please join us in saluting Susan Stielow, Fátima S. Khokhar, Melissa Campbell Speach, Rosemary Zore, and Jennifer McCurry, whose stories begin on page 80. One trend I’ve noticed as a relative newcomer to the area—this month marks my second year in Naples—is that…

His résumé includes stints at power-hitters such as CNN, CNBC, and, since 2004, FOX. At his winter home in Naples, the father of six and grandfather of nine tunes out by relaxing by his pool and spending time with family. Here, the veteran newscaster talks broadcasting and life in Naples. —Judy Martel NI: How did you get started in broadcast television? labor of love

What’s love got to do with it? Everything, says musician Lana Love. “Not the romantic kind but the journey to self-love,” notes the Naples native, who’s finalizing details for her debut album, due this spring. “Love is in every moment, if we can find it.” Love left the Paradise Coast seven years ago to build her career—a journey that’s taken her on long stints to Egypt, the Mediterranean, and China. At 28, Love is bicoastal, splitting time between New York City and Los Angeles, working on the album and as a vocal and dance instructor. Her peers and colleagues at Oakridge Middle School, Community School of Naples, Gulf Coast High School, Naples Players KidzAct, and TheatreZone knew Love as Alana Neuman. “I never really fit in at school, but I always fit…

working for scale

Name: Stephanie Spell Day job: Chief of Community Engagement, Collier County Sheriff’s Office Passion: Fly fishing How it started: It’s something that I’ve always been fascinated with because I grew up in the mountains of upstate New York. About three years ago, my daughter, Jess, and I took a weekend outdoor women’s course held by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and one of the intensives was four hours of beginning fly fishing. Excuse the pun, but we were both hooked. Now my husband, who’s always been a big golfer—I was never into golf—travels all over the world fly fishing. Why it’s special: To me, it’s an art form that makes me feel really connected to the environment, and it’s a huge challenge. It’s totally catch and release. A lot of the things…
