holiday traditions

Growing up in a family of seven, I have so many treasured memories of Christmastime. Our house was full of excitement at any given moment. Santa was always right on the mark (with the exception of the oranges and nuts in our stockings), and would leave a small pile of gifts in certain designated areas for each of my siblings. We would all get up before the sun and gather at the top of the stairs, eagerly waiting for the green light from our parents to come down. We moaned and groaned while my dad stalled us with: “Wait a minute, I need to brush my teeth,” or “Wait a minute, I can’t find my slippers.” Of course, he was behind the door with his tongue in his cheek, trying…

revelry and reflection

There always seems to be a sprinkle of pixie dust in the air during the month of December. It’s a time to reflect on the year that was, the lessons learned, the challenges surpassed, and, most importantly, the blessings we are oh-so thankful for. But it’s also time to look forward with excitement and energy for the breath of fresh air that every new year brings. Somewhere in between is a firm embrace of the present, as we take in every moment of the holidays—and all the revelry that it entails with family and friends. NI: How has writing helped you deal with your struggles? Collins: It kept me on the planet, that’s for sure. After my son died, I put out three books about recovering from traumatic loss as well as the creative process: Sanity and Grace; Morning, Noon, and Night; and The Seven T’s. I found journaling to be very important to these issues and wrote every day. I don’t have an answer for how to prevent suicide, but by tackling the issue, you help break down the taboo surrounding it and ultimately find the strength to get through it. How do you maintain such a grueling schedule? I’m healthy, which is fantastic, and that’s mainly why I can do what I do. I’m very much in favor of finding natural and holistic ways to stay…

Spot it at the right of the ticketing office. 2 Kapnick Brazilian Garden: Silk Floss Tree This spiky, thorny tree gets its name from its big pods that burst open in the spring, containing black seeds attached to cotton balllike puffs that float down to the ground. Look out for its pale pink blossoms in the winter. 3 Kapnick Caribbean Garden: Geiger Tree Native to Florida, this tree is known for its sprawling reach and bright orange flowers. CORKSCREW SWAMP SANCTUARY As part of the Atlantic Flyway, a national bird migration route, Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is one of the best places to spot migratory birds. During season, the sanctuary offers its popular Early Birding Walks once a month at 8 a.m., to spot rarely seen birds that tend to be dormant in the afternoon. The birders leading the three-hour walks describe how to identify birds and talk about their habits and habitats, as well as the importance of helping birds in our local community. The sanctuary will also host its 119th annual Christmas Bird Count on December 16, a traditional census of the area’s birds. (cork screw.audubon.org) THE CONSERVANCY OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA The Conservancy’s Nature Center, part of The Great Florida Birding Trail, offers 45-minute electric boat tours or two-hour…
