bright ideas

When you speak to the brightest people in any creative field, you can’t help but want to know how they can see what is invisible to everyone else. They may not know exactly how it comes to them, but they certainly have vision and a desire to explore the depths of their imagination. You can bet these creatives look for bright ideas everywhere. What often emerges is some sort of stunningly inspired creation that prompts us to gush: “I want that!” No matter if it’s couture on the fashion runways, an exquisitely designed room in a home, or something that simply defies categorization, we revere creative expression. In this issue, you’ll see some of that creativity come to life in our pages. In “Scene Stealers,” beginning on page 86, we asked local…

Singer-songwriter and Naples native Casey Weston will return to her hometown for two performances at Artis— Naples on February 21. The 25-year-old emerged on the local scene in her early teens, performing at local coffee shops, bars, and events. Her big break came at age 18, when she became a semifinalist on the first season of NBC’s Emmy Award-winning show The Voice. After appearing on the show, she moved to Nashville to build a career in the country music capital of the nation, but returns as often as possible to her loyal fan base in South Florida. Q&A CASEY WESTON NI: Have you always wanted to be a singer? Weston: Yes! My mom says that by the time I could talk, I was singing. I’d play My Heart Will Go On, get on…

When veteran journalist Lesley Stahl talks about her work as a reporter, no matter the topic, you can hear the excitement in the timbre of her voice. “It’s surprising how when I’m working on a story, it becomes my favorite,” says Stahl, a longtime correspondent with the CBS network’s iconic newsmagazine 60 Minutes. “Right now, I’m doing a story on the science of seaweed,” she says. “I’m falling in love with seaweed—go explain that, right? I had my first taste of seaweed today and it tasted really good! I thought it was going to be horrible and that I would have to spit it out on camera. Anyway, I’m into it.” Stahl is into her work with a passionate intensity that has yet to wane after a half century in broadcast news. She…

THE HORS D’OEUVRES: Customized cheese and charcuterie trays are all the rage right now, so sample different types of meats and pâtés before selecting at least two or three kinds, along with some accompaniments. “Olives are always a great choice, preferably pitted,” says Mellilo. “Add some small slices of bread on the side as well, and you can put together a little crostini.” THE ENTRÉE: Salads, shrimp platters, and small sandwiches are the most portable and easiest to eat. Mellilo suggests a platter of pinwheel sandwiches, created when slicing a wrap sandwich into inch-and-a-half-thick rounds. For another twist on the traditional sandwich, she suggests trying a combination of brie, fresh turkey, and fig spread. THE DESSERT: Chocolate-covered strawberries and raspberry-vanilla cupcakes are a few classic picnic indulgences, while a slice of Wynn’s…
