style & substance

At the height of the social season, it’s no surprise that the charitable events and galas in March far outnumber the days in the month. Of course, it’s wonderful to see all these fabulous fundraisers bring in so much money to support the underserved areas of our community that need it the most. The hard part is deciding which invitations to say no to because there aren’t enough days (or enough you) to attend them all. Another dilemma during season, which is one we often keep to ourselves, is trying to figure out what to wear to yet another soiree. In this issue, we turn to three stylish and charitable local ladies to share some of their fashion sense and sensibilities as they navigate the social scene. Find out what trends they’re…

q&a ernie hudson

FRESH PERSPECTIVE When you need inspiration, who you gonna call? Hollywood actor Ernie Hudson, of course, whose role as one of the original Ghostbusters accounts for just a sliver of his long-standing career on stage and screen. His success came after overcoming major challenges at an early age. Hudson grew up in the housing projects of Benton Harbor, Michigan; he never knew his father, and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was three months old. “I didn’t have a mom or dad, but I was fortunate to have my grandmother, who gave me an unquestionable sense of stability and love,” he says. “I realized the important thing was having a support system, someone to let you know that you’re loved and are going to be okay.” Hudson will be the…

keynote gift

At the Women’s Foundation of Collier County’s recent Power of the Purse event, broadcast journalist and guest speaker Ann Curry was so moved by the work the foundation does for local women and girls that she made a snap decision. “We were presenting videos of the grants given this year featuring recipients whose lives have been affected, and it was during the presentation that Ann [said] she was going to donate her entire speaker fee to the organization,” says Cindi Withorn, marketing director for the Women’s Foundation (wfcollier.org). “We never had a speaker do that before.” After deducting booking fees, her spur-of-the-moment donation totaled more than $27,000.…

building community

The Community Foundation of Collier County (cfcollier.org) recently received its first donation of a commercial building, courtesy of Jerry Nichols, a local wealth management advisor and longtime supporter of the foundation. The central Naples building, which Nichols owned for 10 years, provides rental income. Now, instead of a chunk of that income going to the IRS for taxes, the full amount goes directly to Nichols’ donoradvised fund, which supports nonprofits that improve children’s lives through education, access to healthcare, and a safe environment. Nichols also serves on the foundation’s professional advisor committee, which encourages people to make donations during their lifetime so they can see how their gift is benefiting the community. Meanwhile, Naples residents Sam and Cindy Scalise recently donated a private residence valued at $2.5 million to the NCH Healthcare…

virtual passage

Avow, a nonprofit hospice in Naples, now offers its patients a chance to experience some of the joy of traveling the world, even if they can’t physically be there. The Moorings Park Foundation recently donated five headsets of the Oculus Virtual Reality System, which can simulate experiences such as visiting the Great Wall of China or walking the halls of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Last year, Avow Foundation (avowcares.org/foundation) created a wish list wall for its staff to make requests that would benefit patients and their families. The donation came after Cynthia Nehrkorn, vice president of Avow’s medical services, wrote “Virtual reality for patients” on the wall. “We have a variety of experiences we can upload to the headsets, so we can choose according to the requests we get from…
