FALL FLAVORS Autumn is harvest season, and nothing says fall quite like the pumpkin. This colorful fruit (yes, it’s a fruit!) isn’t just for jacko’-lanterns and spiced lattes—it’s also the perfect addition to pancakes. Whip up a batch of these delicious pumpkin pancakes, given a tropical twist with a drizzle of coconut cream cheese syrup, courtesy of the Treasures & Travels lifestyle blog. (treasuresandtravelsblog.com) Ingredients (serves 4) 1 package Bob’s Red Mill buttermilk pancake mix 1 egg 1 tbsp. oil 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup canned pumpkin or fresh pumpkin puree 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup cream cheese 1 cup coconut milk Combine pancake mix, egg, oil, and milk. Mix until blended, then add pumpkin and cinnamon. Cook on preheated griddle at medium heat, flipping the pancakes when the edges begin to brown and bubbles form in the center. To make cream…

q&a stephen bogart celebrating a legend

Although born into Hollywood royalty, Stephen Bogart exudes an unpretentious air, sprinkling a conversation with self-deprecating wit. As the son of legendary actors Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, he devotes himself to sharing and preserving his father’s work. He also works with ECAN, the Esophageal Cancer Action Network, volunteering time, as well as his voice for a PSA, to raise awareness, because his father died from esophageal cancer. Stephen moved to Naples a few years ago with his wife, Carla, who works with locally based NewsBank Inc., a leading global information provider. The couple first became friends in 1982, then reconnected after years in and out of touch, and married in 2014. The Bogarts organize a wonderful annual tribute to Bogie—the Humphrey Bogart Film Festival (bogartfilmfestival.com) in Key Largo, with…

NI: What inspired you to open a jewelry store? Janss: When I moved to Naples, there were only 7,000 people here. I was married to someone and he owned a gift store. I was a model, but there weren’t opportunities for that here. My interest in jewelry was what moved me into it. Then, people found out about me, and I started making them jewelry. What has changed about your pieces or design process over the years? A lot, really. I used to make bigger, more artsy pieces, with precious and semiprecious stones. You have to move in the direction of style changes. It’s all a constant state of flux. What has kept you in business all these years? My philosophy is to listen to people. That’s how you discover what they like. I try…

honoring heroes

Local veterans will head to Washington, D.C., on a special trip later this month to be honored for their service and recognized for their sacrifice. It’s all part of Collier County Honor Flight (collierhonorflight.org), which takes World War II and Korean War veterans to the nation’s capital to visit war memorials, as well as to Arlington National Cemetery for the Changing of the Guard. The trips are supported solely by private donations and volunteers, and at no cost to the veterans. Three years ago this month, Collier County Honor Flight was launched by Dr. Deborah Lux, a former U.S. Navy officer, and her husband, Sean, a U.S. Air Force veteran, after being inspired by the documentary Honor Flight, which they watched at a local screening in Naples. The documentary is about…
