AFTER WINTER’S rather drab colour palette, the arrival of spring brings with it a very welcome burst of colour. From the lemon-fresh yellows of daffodils to the plush pinks of apple blossom, the outside world is transformed into a photographer’s paradise. To tap into this earthy reawakening and inspire you to get out and take a closer look, this month’s big feature is dedicated to the beauty of the natural world. Starting on page 34, we present five creative projects that will take you from your home studio to your back garden and beyond, each focusing on a new skill and a new way of looking at the world. Taiwan cherry blossom by Sue Hsu • During spring, when the blossoms are flowering, groups of Japanese white-eyes often gather around the Taiwan cherry trees in the morning. There are sometimes hundreds of these tiny birds congregating in groups to play with and sing to each other. The sheer number of birds makes getting a good composition challenging though. I picked out a good frame with the blossom as the background and then set up my camera on my tripod – and spent two days trying to get this shot. Canon 7D | 300mm | 1/1600sec | f/2.8 | ISO 640 Sue Hsu is a wildlife photographer based in Taiwan. She’s passionate about photography and the exotic creatures she’s surrounded by in her home country. 500px.com/littletree131 Sparks will fly by Lukas Nazdraczew • I took this image…

rumour mill

Fujifilm X80 Following a flurry of releases from Fuji, including the X-Pro2, X-T2, X100F and X-T20, we are expecting the follow-up to the X70 to be announced shortly. Though well reviewed, the X70 never quite found its market and has been discontinued. We’d expect to see the universal 24MP X-Trans CMOS III processor, fixed lens and touchscreen on the X70’s successor, as well as the possibility of a built-in EVF this time around. fujifilm.eu Fujinon XF 8-16mm f/2.8 There are rumours circulating that the next lens to be announced by Fuji will be a super wide-angle 8-16mm f/2.8. This would surpass its current widest lens, the XF 14mm f/2.8, and bolster its ever increasing X-series lens line-up. Fuji is currently scheduled to release both a 50mm f/2 and an 80mm f/2.8 1:1 macro…

NATURE #1 Capture backlit flowers • As the harsh winds of winter melt into spring, the countryside starts to come to life with a plethora of delicate blooms. Tiger Seo (500px.com/tigerseo) shot this beautiful sight. “I enjoy taking photos of flowers in spring, because my mother loves the blooms that are in season at that time. I actually first took up photography to take pictures of these flowers for her. However, now I’ve just fallen in love with shooting them. I can feel the beauty and harmony from each bud, so I always try to express these feelings with my images. “In April there are lovely tulips and shepherd’s purse flower blossoms at the lake near my house. When I go there I can take pictures against the soft morning sunlight, which creates a…
