One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet a wide variety of shop owners and hear them discuss their businesses with pride. meeting house fabric

A former church summer meeting house built in 1901 in Wales, Massachusetts, today welcomes shoppers interested in quilting and other crafts, antiques, primitive art, and gifts. Co-owner Sheila Chabot, who bought the building in 2009 after it was decommissioned, named the shop Meeting House Fabric because of the structure’s original function and continuing ambience. “I’ll never forget the first time we walked in the door,” Sheila says. “We couldn’t even get past the front window before the peace just overtook us. Everyone feels it; everyone feels that peace.” The property, which once also was home to a woolen mill, oozes age and awe. “You can still see the mill’s foundation wrapping around the church,” Sheila says. Sheila and Steve Valle, her partner in life and business, wanted to keep the building’s calm…

quilter’s corner

Whether she was sewing Barbie clothes as a youngster, stitching a crib set as a soon-to-be mom, or building fireplace facades as an architectural ceramicist, Tiffany Sherman has always thrived on creativity. Today she delights in helping others find success in their creative journeys at Quilter’s Corner, a shop in the heart of historic Midlothian, Virginia, a suburb of Richmond. “People are least confident about their creativity,” Tiffany says, “and it’s our job to foster that confidence and provide a safe place for them to explore new things.” The shop has a “magic bed”—an antique bed that is not only a display fixture, but also serves as a creativity launching pad. “It’s a great place to lay out bolts to help customers customize their quilts,” she says. “My thinking is that…
